I am using a Dual 2.7 G5 with Black majic card to Digi/D1/D5

When I edit to tape I am experiencing an audio issue where audio from the clip is sent to tape along with any sound that the computer makes (error beeps, volume adjustment beeps, and anything else that is running while I edit to tape). Now I know that I shouldn’t be running anything else while I am doing this, but I was QCing one of my layoffs and I found a beep on tape from where I adjusted the OS volume. I was allways under the impression that FCP blocked out all sounds while you are laying off. Was I wrong in thinking this? Please let me know if you experience the same or different situation. Thanks!

[cwise73] “Now I know that I shouldn’t be running anything else while I am doing this… I was allways under the impression that FCP blocked out all sounds while you are laying off. Was I wrong in thinking this?”

I would not be doing anything at all on the Mac during a play-out to tape… for many reasons.

So if you don’t, this can’t happen.

Yeah, but does FCP block other audio from being pushed out by the card?

Given your posted problem, with YOUR setup it does not.
The settings on the Mac and the way the card works, in your case creates the unwanted sounds being output.

But every system is different, I know what to expect on MINE, and I’ve had to learn the idiosycraces on the many other systems (FCP and Avids) I use around town.

Regardless, as I said (and I’m not joking), I stay completely AWAY from any Mac that is dubbing OUT.

Far too easy to cause it to “stop in the middle” due to an inadvertent command. (Even a “static” discharge could affect the playing.)

We see this too. If you or your editor insists on leaving other apps open while working, go into the prefs for each offensive app and turn off audio alarms.

Yeah I completely agree with you. It is just that I have been experiencing major irregularities with this system. I had hoped that all of them had been ironed out, but one of our techs did some work on this station and this audio issue appeared. His responce was that it didn’t matter what card was being used, they all would push all of the audio out to the deck. I am just trying to make sure that this is true and the issue is not linked to a greater issue that might come into play the next time I edit to tape.
What Card do you use and do you know if the same condition exist?

Do you have a mixing console in your workflow that feeds your deck? Is your computer hooked up to the board? Make sure that pot is down when you are doing ETT.

This can definitely happen with Blackmagic Cards. Fortunately, all you have to do is change your settings.

    – Go into your System Preferences and choose Sound.
    – Click the Output Tab
    – Instead of “DeckLink Audio” choose “Line Out”

When you have DeckLink Audio selected in your Sound preferences for your computers line out, whether you are capturing or not, your computer’s audio will go out with your SDI/AES/SPDIF. This includes the infamous “bloop” noises that incoming instant messages love to make. 🙁

Make sure your Sound is always set to “Line Out.”
