Well, there’s a ton of ways to do this, but it depends on the way you want it, wich I have trouble understanding in your post.
One way would be to use the Stylise > Glow effect and set the glow mode to “Alpha Glow” and play with the settings by reducing the radius, changing the colors, etc.
Hm…hope someone finds a better way,… still, hope that helped!

You might want to turn the 3D switch on your precomped layer, then hit the Rasterized button (the little icon that looks like a sun in your timeline) and create a light.
Check out this great tutorial from Bryan Preston that explains the basics of precomposing.

First, create a new document, anywhere on your computer, and let’s say you call it ” Dust Cloud Anim. ”
In Particle Illusion, when your animation, in the Preview Window, is complete, and then you want to render it, do these steps:
– Click on the red dot (Save Output)
– Find your ” Dust Cloud Anim. ” folder, and double-click on it
– Name your file (let’s say ” Dust “) and choose the *.TGA format
– Click “Save”
– In the window box that just appeared, check “Save Alpha”
– Two other options appeared; check “Create non-intensive alpha” and uncheck “Remove black bg from RGB channels”.
– Click OK.In After Effects,
– Double-click in the Project Window.
– Go to your ” Dust Cloud Anim. ” folder by double-clicking on it
– Click once on the first TGA picture inthe folder. If you named your file ” Dust “, then click on ” Dust-10001 ” and at the bottom of this window box, click ” Targa Sequence “.
– Click OK.
– Bring this in a new comp.Hope that helped.

If I understand well your question, make sure your mask property is set to “Add” or “Substract” depending on how you want the final result to look like.

If you are rotoscoping (with masks), you could use a proxy for the layer that you are working on. Or even turning the Mask mode to “None”.
Try Open GL, turn down the comp quality to “Half”, use keyboards shortcuts if that can help. That always speed things up.
Just a few recommandations.

I just wanted to point out that, in my case, whenever I need inspiration, I just open AE, drop in my comp Photoshop’s custom shapes already saved in PNG and then just play around and the results are always incredible.
There’s a proverb that says..if I remember well…Appetite comes with eating.
Well we could easily compare this as getting inspiration for your work. I’m not making any fact here or trying to bring some kind of complicated theory, I’m just saying that sometimes it’s just a great way to start something…fresh and new. So yeh, it works for me, and after reading your post I just supposed we are quite at the same level in AE.

Of course you could use a displacement map. Simply draw your gradient and assign at as a displacement map.
Better, keyframe a distortion effect (maybe liquify) for a frame and then bring it back to its original the next frame.
If you’re looking for a plug-in, DigiEffects Delirium as an effect called “Video Malfunction” that does exactly what you’re looking for.
