First thing’s first, since your referred to Serge in your post, should we propose that you have Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro?
If you do, you can download a free 3D ball from here (click on the one you prefer).
So in Zaxwerks you could easily do that “inside out” camera move.
You could search in the COW’s archives too, we recently talked about how to create a 3D ball without the use of any 3D plug-ins inside of AE.

Well, there’s a ton of ways to do this, but it depends on the way you want it, wich I have trouble understanding in your post.
One way would be to use the Stylise > Glow effect and set the glow mode to “Alpha Glow” and play with the settings by reducing the radius, changing the colors, etc.
Hm…hope someone finds a better way,… still, hope that helped!
