So what about this Quality % option on most video converters (Vegas Included). Does the same %age usually yeild the same level of quality? Since it seems different types of video and even different specific videos need different bit rates to produce the same quality, I thought this might be a viable option. Is it? Does anyone use the %age option and get consistent results?

Actually, I created the M4V files with Handbrake. I did not purchase them from apple, and they are not copywritten.

I was afraid I would have to use yet another program. That’s okay though, I can handle that.

So do you think that M4V will be around for a long time, or will I be stuck with movies in an unsupported format?

More importantly, if I do find myself stuck in that situation, will I be able to convert the container format but keep the same codec and not lose any quality?

Thanks, John. So far you have been the one to answer all of my questions this month!

    Thanks, John.
I did find out that Vegas Platinum with not open MKV files. I still do have the original VIDEO_TS folder (and the actual DVD for that matter) So I would just be creating an MKV file from the VIDEO_TS, which I won’t since Vegas won’t recognize it.

Did you read my post about the larger M4V files not opening in Vegas, and if so, do you have any ideas about it. I would hate to do hours of experimentation with MP4 just to find out it will yield the same problem.

Thanks again for answering so many of my questions.

Actually, now that I think about it I have worked with files up to 26GB in size. So I’m not sure why these specific files will not load.

Since my last post I have even used the same 10 presets for a shorter segment of that same video which wasn’t working before. The smaller files opened just fine. So what could be causing the problems with only the larger files?

    Thanks,
    Justin

    Thanks for the response John.

The reason I don’t do this is because my player won’t play the files that handbrake produces. I have a Mach Speed Trio TCH-843. It is supposed to play AVI/MP4, but every AVI/MP4 Handbrake produces won’t play. The player will also play WMVs and FLVs. I have been able to sucessfully create these files, but again, they take a lot of work. Since my last post I experimented with a lot of converters. One called “Super” worked pretty well. It created files my Trio can play, but about half the time it would not deal with the IFOs so I had to go directly to the VOBs which are not sepparated by episode. In addition to that I can’t join the files together with Super, because selecting the “Direct Show Decode” option necessary to do that causes errors. I have tried this on many DVDs (all ripped with DVD Decrypter). All of them have problems. The only program that has been able to reliably convert the files has been Handbrake, which won’t produce a file my Trio can read. I need to either add codecs to my Trio, add codecs to Handbrake, or find a Handbrake alternative.

I tried it and compared screen shots to the original and they were identical! That is a must for me. I’m trying to make tributes to some of my favorite older videogames and I already have about 800 GB of video. I’ve meticulously worked out each step of recording and protecting the captures. This was the last step, and you have helped me solve it much faster. I wouldn’t have even known which question to ask a search engine. It would have taken me days.

So thank you very much for the time you have saved me, and for giving me the perfect solution to my problem!
