  • Trouble with VOB files

I have backed up my DVD collection on my hard drive in the form of VIDEO_TS folders. I’m trying to use Movie Studio Platinum to convert the VOBs to AVIs. Sometimes this works fine, other times I get weird results. For instance a 24 DVD had VOBs that showed up as video files of the correct length but audio files of about 5 seconds. It was as if the rest of the audio did not exist. I even stretched it out, and all it did was repeat the same 5 seconds over and over again. I’m trying to get these things on a handheld device, and I have a way to do it, I use Handbrake to convert the VIDEO_TS folder into single files, then I use MS Platinum to convert them into something my handheld will play. The problem is this takes about 4 hours for a 1 hour video. I need soom solution to take the VIDEO_TS, the VOBs, or the IFO files and in one step convert them into an AVI that my handheld will play.

    Thank you,
    Justin

Why aren’t you using Handbrake for the whole thing? You don’t need Movie Studio for this at all. The whole purpose of Handbreak is to convert DVD’s to any hand-held device. That’s what is does.

    Thanks for the response John.

The reason I don’t do this is because my player won’t play the files that handbrake produces. I have a Mach Speed Trio TCH-843. It is supposed to play AVI/MP4, but every AVI/MP4 Handbrake produces won’t play. The player will also play WMVs and FLVs. I have been able to sucessfully create these files, but again, they take a lot of work. Since my last post I experimented with a lot of converters. One called “Super” worked pretty well. It created files my Trio can play, but about half the time it would not deal with the IFOs so I had to go directly to the VOBs which are not sepparated by episode. In addition to that I can’t join the files together with Super, because selecting the “Direct Show Decode” option necessary to do that causes errors. I have tried this on many DVDs (all ripped with DVD Decrypter). All of them have problems. The only program that has been able to reliably convert the files has been Handbrake, which won’t produce a file my Trio can read. I need to either add codecs to my Trio, add codecs to Handbrake, or find a Handbrake alternative.

If the player supports MP4 then it’s just a matter of figuring out what parameters to use in Handbreak. I would contact the Trio manufacturer and ask them specifically what attributes the MP4 file needs to be compatible with their device (unless the user’s manual already tells you this) It’s just a matter of finding the right combination.
