Using the camera as a deck just causes more wear & tear on the cameras heads. When it comes time to replace the heads you will have to send your camera in to service. If you are digitizing whole tapes in one shot it’s not really an issue. It’s more of an issue when batch digitizing many clips from a tape causing a lot of stops and starts.

You can’t record onto a firestore as 1080i becuase the cross conversion is only possible via analog out (maybe SDI on the 250 but not sure). You would then need a Black Magic or AJA card to capture analog component HD. In other words the conversion is not possible over firewire.
Depending on your NLE there’s nothing wrong with capturing the JVC as 720p60 and just dropping the footage into your 1080i timeline. I pretty sure the lates release of FCP does this in real time now but I haven’t tested it.

My little production company went 2 1/2 years using JVC cams (GY-DV5000U) and Sony decks (DSR-30) without a hiccup so it’s not a JVC-Sony thing. Now we use HD200’s with JVC’s deck but I’ve played the DV footage in the DSR-30 withoug issue.
If I were you I’d just rent a firestore with the camera. Renting a mini-DV camera (any brand) is kind of a recipe for disaster becuase of mixed tape issues. The heads are so fickle that just changing tape brands throws them off. I’m talking about all DV cameras here.

Rodney, you are exactly right. I am editing for DVD as I usually mix sound right up to zero which would be pushing my analog mixer way over. The mixer can’t trim the input, it only applies gain, which is a bummer.
Anyway, Ty was correct that I have the input coming in on mic inputs so I’m going to go and get some XLR to TRS cables for line level input on the mixer.
Thanks for the reply as it was very helpful!

Yes, I am using the XLR mic inputs which I think is a problem. Shoot! I don’t have any XLR to TRS cables lying around.
Looks like a lunch trip to the musician’s store is in order.
Thanks Ty.

You’ll find nothing in the manual about “virtual cluster”.
What throws people is that the term “virtual cluster” is not an Apple term and does not show up in any literature. “Quick Cluster” is the more accurate term.
Search Compressor’s manual for quick cluster and you’ll see how easy it is.
Best.

I hate to refer another baord but you must know about this if you own a JVC HD camera.

Also the backfocus is very sensitive! I calibrate before every shoot. Apparently the Fuji 17x is better in that it’s parts are more robust.
I also know for a fact that one must calibrate the Sony F900’s all the time due to temp changes as well so I’m not complaining. Still beats a fixed pseudo lens.
Best.

We have two of them (HD200’s) and definitely see some dropouts here and there. But I have to say that they are not recorded on tape. They occur when we go to digitize with the BR-HD50. I go back to check the tape and the dropouts are not there. The deck is fickle.
Just to reiterate- the cameras have been solid using only JVC pro HDV tape.

July 31, 2007 at 11:30 pm in reply to: Let’s talk about monitoring audio because Intensity’s is not good!Well I went out and bought an AV amp with HDMI pass through. Works great except for the fact that it doesn’t convert the HDMI audio to analog for connection to my mixer and reference monitors. One could just use the amp’s speaker connections with home speakers but I have dedicated monitoring system that only accepts XLR or TRS.
Oh well.
HELLO io HD!
