  • Lots of tutorials both on this site, and on the Avid site, but you’ll have to pick and choose.

Use either PAINT (in IMAGE) or ANIMATTE (in Key), and draw a narrow rectangle along the appropriate edge, soften its edge and you’ve got it.

    Allow me to disagree!
Editing is about rythm as much as anything else, feeling the rythm of the subject and the pictures and the feeling you want to convey in the cuts. In that case having an outside source which must influence your internal rythms must be a diversion.

I would only listen to music if it is a part of the subject being cut.

The normal workflow would be that you capture at low resolution in the first place, edit that, then only capture high resolution what you need for the finished version.

But be careful not to copy user settings from one major version of Avid to another (eg from V4 to V5) as this will cause annoying and untraceable little problems. In that case you must re-create settings from scratch.

If what you’re trying to manipulate is the size and position of the necklace, use the matte key’s own resizing and positioning parameters, don’t add another resize effect on the V2.

The normal workflow would be for the editor to use all 4 useful tracks.
Why would s/he want to do something different?

    Hi Marina,
welcome to The Cow, and congratulations on getting a job so quickly.
But I suspect that may be part of the your problem!
Most editors will have spent years as a runner or assistant before becoming an editor, they will have sat on the shoulder of an editor watching and learning.

I would recomend trying to meet other, experienced, editors in the area, see if you can sit in with them whilst they’re working.
    You’ll learn a lot.

But keep asking those questions, – the only silly question is the one that isn’t asked.

    And Good Luck

October 30, 2010 at 7:35 pm in reply to: keyboard shortcut for adjusting audio gain?

Besides the Auto Gain method, you can adjust the volume of a clip using the Audio Mixer tool, either by dragging the slider or by typing in the desired gain.
Also, on the quick menu at the top of the Audio Mixer window, you can adjust the gain either for a whole track or in-out.

Also while I’m replying, no you can’t do any of those without it stopping the playback (At least that’s so on MC3, I don’t know about MC5)

    Hi Guy,
You’ve somehow got yourself into Auto Pan mode.
To get out of it, go into the quick menu (hamburger) at the bottom left of the timeline, go to Audio Data, if you’ve got a tick by the auto pan, unclick that.
If that’s not it, then I don’t know.
