Believe me, I didn’t start making this thing more complicated. I have worked in AE for years, but now I’m going to FCP (vs. Avid) and using still images, and have run into this odd problem.

So… I took your advice,
– started a new composition from scratch, (720×480-using the DV preset),
– resized the 3504×2336 image to 200×1333,
– added my photo (with one additional layer for the dissolve, nothing else yet),
– did a small zoom-in (didn’t go past 70% enlargement), and got the same thing.

Here is a link to a small portion of the clip. It’s full res (80Mb) animation codec, lower field. The problem is the ringing around the metal edges, especially at the bottom between the black and the metal edge.

Dave, These are nice, big still images. They are from an 8MP camera. I have used the original (3504×2336), I have resized in Photoshop to 200×1333, with the same results.

Thanks David. Well, besides the photo, I am adding several layers of solids created in the AE composition (with masks) and moving the entire composition (zooming in). There are some photos I am doing moves on in FCP (and they look great), but some just need more effects.

OK. But putting markers on the clips doesn’t allow you to navigate to them using Shift-M or Alt-M. You have to zoom in on the timeline and scroll across to find each Marker. Not very efficient, but thanks for the suggestion.

You were right. I copied the QT file to a media drive and it imported. The same file does not import from the Desktop folder where it was originally rendered from LiveType.

You mention buying an older version of FCP on eBay, then using Apple’s upgrade program. Do I need to install the old version, which may not run on my new Macbook Pro, and then reinstall with the new version? Does Apple send a whole new set of discs?

I am not familiar with how the Apple crossgrade program works. Any help?

Danny,

When you burn the disc, you need to burn the Video_TS folder, and the
files INSIDE the Image folder. Do not add the Image folder, but add the
files inside the Image folder. You should see the “autorun” file. These
files and the Video_TS should then be burned.

That is one of the many mistakes I made–hopefully your trouble is as easy
as that.
