We have a PC that I installed the programs on this morning and I am able to view clips and play them with the Windows PDZ-1 software. Still no go with the Mac.

I found your comment and thought you may have some answers since you upgraded several machines.

I read about the firmware update for the Sony PDW-U1 XDCam disc player that would allow this deck to record. We have not been able to record back to the deck. I down loaded the package from Sony, installed, and checked the firmware. We had an older version so I upgraded.

Now, every disc I insert shows “0 clips” in the XDCam Transfer software – not good. Played the disc in another deck (the 75) and they play fine.

Any ideas?

So I downloaded from the link, confirmed all was good, installed the Firmware upgrade and now the PDW-U1 doesn’t see any clips on the disc (or any disc). I can see clips on the 75 deck, but not the U1, so I know it’s not a disc issue.

Any ideas?

All Nikon’s that I have seen are 1280p. Even there “New” $5,000 USD D3s is 1280×720.

Canon has announced a new T2i that has a wide variety of shooting flavors. 1920 x 1080 (Full HD): 30p (29.97) / 24p (23.976) / 25p, 1280 x 720: 60p (59.94) / 50p, 640 x 480 (SD): 60p (59.94) / 50p). Not sure when they will release it. And it is below $1,000 USD.

I don’t see Nikon creating new cameras with video capabilities the way Canon has.

Brian, you mean re-rendered, right?

I’ve seen funky things happen with titles when 16×9 is on and titles were created in 4×3, or vise-verse.

Haven’t seen this yet, but I haven’t shared my project with another Mac.

What else would the grant money be used for if not to pay the people who work on the project (you or any others)? (Besides equipment rental, tape or other disposables, etc.)

It would not be out of bounds to pay a fair wage for work performed – which includes yourself. The important thing is to budget your project and make sure the funds will provide a finished product that meets the requirements of the grant.

I have been working in SD with 4.0.5 on (ugh) Vista and have not had any issues. Check the size of the images. If you have new, huge megapixel images, try scaling them down to 2x your finished size (1440x for SD). I know there have been issues with large images and RAM.

Rob, this is one of those questions that has been posted on the Cow many times. We are all looking for the optimal file type/settings.

Regarding file size. Many corporations I have worked with do have a limit on file size, but almost any good size company will allow a file of at least 5MB. Other email servers (yahoo, google) will allow much larger files. I have sent files as large as 10MB through email – but I made sure the client could handle that.

So, depending on how you make your files, you will have to run some tests of clips and find a good “default” for your product. Start with some basic settings and make several versions, tweaking as you go.

There are also some encoding programs (Telestream Episode, Squeeze) that will allow you to set up watch folders and whenever a file lands in the folder it does x, y and z.

I know that isn’t the exact answer you are looking for, but I’m not sure optimal settings exist for every project.
