  • XDCam Firmware Update Problem – PDW-U1

Posted by Ed Cilley on March 9, 2010 at 3:50 pm

I read about a firmware update for the Sony PDW-U1 XDCam disc player that would allow this deck to record. We have not been able to record back to the deck. I down loaded the package from Sony, installed, and checked the firmware. We had an older version so I upgraded.

Now, every disc I insert shows “0 clips” in the XDCam Transfer software – not good. Played the disc in another deck (the 75, not through the computer) and they play fine.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Ed

What version of OS X are you running over there Ed? I believe there may still be some direct compatibility problems with the U1 and Snow Leopard. That may be a factor if thats what you’re running.

    Thanks Andy,

Yeah, I read about those issues. I am on Leopard (not Snow) 10.5.8.

    Firmware 2.420 Driver 2.2.1
    Sony XDCam Transfer 2.7.1

We have a PC that I installed the programs on this morning and I am able to view clips and play them with the Windows PDZ-1 software. Still no go with the Mac.

Aha! Well there you go Ed, you need to upgrade your XDCAM Transfer to 2.9 or later which is when write back to the U1 was introduced. I’d recommend grabbing the latest version (2.11) available here:

Andy, Thanks for your super quick response. Sony website is interesting. I followed another link provided on the Cow a couple weeks ago and did not see the newer versions of this software I see with your link.

This solved my problem. Life is good again. Thanks.

FYI the fix for the U-1 XDCam issue is out. I just downloaded it from the Sony FTP site. Call 1-800-883-6817 for the IP address and download information. The Sony tech mentioned it will be posted on the Sony website soon. I’m assuming soon is this week.
