I dont think there is a software solution but there is a hardware solution. Editshare systems work natively with both FCP and Avid and Editshare Flow stores the media as UMF which effectively appears to FCP as a mov and Avid as a MXF etc.

You shouldnt lose any project files doing the upgrade however you may lose your user setting. I would export your user setting and copy the project folders into another location or drive to be on the safe side (the actual media files will be fine but if you want to be extra careful rename the avid media folder or move it to within another folder so Avid cant locate it).

Have you considered getting an edl of a timeline containing just the clips you are looking to render respaced so there are no gaps inbetween?

I’ve had things happen the other way (getting a bit blown out). I’ve found that it is almost always an issue with gamma correction on the import or export for the media. If you open the file in another programme doesn it have the same problem?

Its fine to rename clips in avid however I would always keep the original name for the master clips and rename the subclips.

April 12, 2011 at 9:45 am in reply to: Saving a sequence as a new independent project

I would create an AAF of the sequence chosing to copy all media and embed it in the AAF. If you have additional or alternative shots that the new guy may want put all of them on another sequence and export another AAF.

  • It would be possible if a little akward to restore the project to 1080p. But at the end of the day the client has not asked for a TV quality version and have only employed you for a web advert; if they change their mind later its their problem to sort it out not yours (and they will probably solve it by paying you extra to do the conversion).

    Hi,
I have used a imac for capturing and transcoding XDCam footage, Obivously it was a little slower a performing the task than the mac pro that I ended up editing on would have been. But it did perform the task very well and left me free to sort out the project settings and the audio rushes while the transcodes were happening.
So all in all i’d recomend geting the imac as long as its primary fuction is going to be encoding and transcode etc.
