August 26, 2005 at 6:44 pm in reply to: AJA Io capture problem…HELP!

Turns out Io had updated drivers for Tiger. Between that and repairing permissions on the disk the problem is solved!

    Thanks for the help!

You can edit P2 in FCP5. The down sides according to the guy who did a demo for us is that you have to have the P2 drive. Can’t just put the card in a PCMCIA slot. The other down side is FCP doesn’t read the metadata. So you can’t see which are marked or if they have memos attached to them in FCP. Won’t slow me down though.

It seems to me the majority (if not all) of the people having problems with Tiger/FCP 5.0/QT 7 are upgrades. Is there anyone out there having difficulty with a completely new setup?

I’d like to hear all sides of the story.

    Thanks!

Isn’t the holographic media recorded in a translusent gell? That doesn’t sound very reliable to me. It also sounds like something that would not write properly with one good bump. And how will temperature affect it? If it’s real cold (-30F is a good winter’s day here in Fargo.) does the gell get thicker thus making it harder for the lasers to write properly? Sounds risky. I’ll stick with tried and true technology for a few years until all the “what if’s” are answered. At least SD cards are proven to handle the elements.

Also use your scopes to check the levels of the pictures. If the bright spots are too bright, you can get a lot of strange effects. You may need to knock the luminance down just a bit.

[Travis Miller] “I always figured that a television station would have a way to get it off of the dvd”

Hee hee hee! That’s funny because I work at a station that didn’t take dvd until a few months ago. We started getting local ads on dvd (most are from small-time prod houses) and finally we just bought a dvd player to dub from.

We also finally got a beta deck. Not a recorder though. I think we’re the only station in the US that cant record to beta.

Non-linear editing? Yeah, we’re still using the Panasonic PostBox. It’s a scary workhorse. Can’t do anything fancy without an hour or two extra for rendering.

I’ve been begging the GM to get a Final Cut Pro system. I think we may finally be close to getting it, but it’s hard to say. It took six years to decide to get new studio cameras.

Yeah, television stations, at least in the 100+ markets, are the last to get anything like that. I’m also pushing for P2 for acquisition. I’m just hoping we can get ahead for once.

[Graeme Nattress] “To call some video 36bit sounds like creative marketing to me 🙂 “

Don’t get those marketing guys started!

Takes me back to the “old” SX and DX days of computers. I remember my dad explaining to me that a 386SX is really the same as a 286DX. Something about math co-processors in the DX but not SX.

Like my extended ASCII alpha-numeric user interface. (Or a keyboard to the rest of us.)

May 4, 2005 at 3:23 pm in reply to: green screen blues…(blue screen too)

Jewelry tends to reflect the green or blue at least a little. So that makes it tough to key out background without keying some of the diamonds. I’ve tried to key jewelry a couple times without acceptable results. I’d say just shoot it with a flat black background. You may be able to do a luminance key with that, but I’ve never tried. I just use a black background because it gives more contrast to the jewelry. And a star filter gives a nice touch to the shine of the jewelry. I suppose if it’s a still shot, you could import the shot into photoshop and make a matte for it. Then use the matte to key in FCP. Let me know if you find something that works.

    Good luck!
