  • [Tony Velez] “Would adding a second ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB video card to the empty video card slot in the Mac Pro tower help increase the render speed in final cut pro 7?”

Shane is as usual correct. FCP really is quite limited in asset efficiency, but the root cause is that Quicktime is not really multi-threadable, and FCP is Quicktime.

You read about really great rendering efficiency with other applications, but they are, for the most part, 64-bit, and built to take advantage of GPU off-loading, and CUDA processing, none of which Final Cut knows anything about.

[Hoku Uchiyama] “ACCEPT when put any kind of overlay on it, like a png file with transparent space”

May or may not be relevant, but is the .png set for the correct gamma?

Concur. The Canon codec is not much better than 8-bit XDCam, so you’re just wasting time and space, and opening yourself up to small conform discrepancies. So if you do opt to try to re-connect, you are well advised to create a chase-conform and CHECK it against the Resolve timeline.

Practically two different industries. That’s what I get from my producer-clients.

So… any of you watch sports?

Yes, I know the leagues have their streaming websites — and they are definitely monetized to the tune of a buck a day plus whatever your provider fees are, and pro sports are about nothing if not commercial advertising— and the way to the viewers is broadcast.

This is a good number to work with (8 MB/frame).

Think in terms of 10 or 11x ProRes, or about 11 GB/minute for 1080p23.98 for example.

May 3, 2013 at 3:40 pm in reply to: need advice.

From the current configuration guide for R9:

    Apple iMac:
    21.5-inch, Mid 2011, 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 or faster
    21.5-inch, Mid 2011, 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 or faster or 27-inch, Mid 2011, 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 or faster
    27-inch, Mid 2011, 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.8 in 64bit mode
RAM: 8GB minimum, 12GB accepable, 16GB or more recommended

    Any of this familiar?

Otherwise, you may want to do a purge — uninstall/reinstall.

For all the similarities, the full license version is not identical in operation and requirements with the Lite.

May 3, 2013 at 3:17 pm in reply to: Removing Dead Pixels

[Ben Edwards] “Was wondering if it was possible to set a qualifier on white pixels so I can turn them down.”

Stuck pixels don’t move around (but moving objects in the picture content obviously complicates the correction) so what I normally do is crate a teensy weensy power window and set a blur so that the pixel is naturally migrating towards whatever the adjacent pixel values are.

This approach breaks down whenever an edge crosses the qualifier, so it requires a keyframe/tweak. So the technique either works a treat or (depending on picture activity) is more trouble than its worth.

However, it doesn’t require any plugins or roundtripping pass-back and forth.

May 2, 2013 at 3:33 pm in reply to: Framerate question (29.97 to 23.98)

[Shane Ross] “Go 23.98. Web loves Progressive, hates interlaced.”

The only way that 23.98 converted to 29.97 looks any good is 2:3 interlaced, and a web compression will take this away.

And besides, 6 fewer frames/sec reduces the file size and bitrate.

[Ben Edwards] “So I did this and tried to import into FCP 7 and got message ‘please choose a translation document’. Googled but no luck. I tried both the 1.0 and 1.2 fcpxml options.”

Could you clarify whether you are trying to accomplish an EDL or XML transmission document? One of them is plain text (CMX-type) and the other is an HTML markup…

May 1, 2013 at 3:25 pm in reply to: Another Mac Pro Hardware Config question

It depends on your operating system. Almost unlimited if you are currently MtnLion 10.8.3, except the new Titans may need 10.8.4, which is still in beta, and may have to wait until at least WWDC June.

Seriously though, the Q4000 is approximately the lamest CUDA card you could possibly buy and still use.

There are the macvidcards for sub-Mountain Lion, and in-between if you don’t need the boot up Apple screen. There are dozens of threads discussing the topic on this forum.
