A test I’d run quickly, especially if you’re outputting in target mode, is to test render a prores file and link it through AMA. Just to see what happens on your system. Also, is there a weird chance that you avid is somehow adding setup? Or doing something weird on output?

Makes me dream of a universally accepted open source mezzanine codec…

January 17, 2012 at 4:20 pm in reply to: Color trace or power grade to copy grades?

Using color trace hasn’t worked out well for me in the past…

But why aren’t you just adding an XML/EDL of the new edit into your project? It’s simple, all your grades will line up. And render them out with handles if you need to.

Lock is never locked, and honestly that’s why I love DaVinci, adding a new EDL/XML is cake and all your grades just copy over.

    December 20, 2011 at 7:06 pm in reply to: Building a Resolve…GT470 or 285

Yeah, I’m just throwing a lot less money at a decent PC motherboard, and I’m going to give windows a try.

I’m looking at putting together a box for ~1200$ that will trounce my Mac. It kinda makes me sad.

I’m looking to build around a multiple set of 460ti’s as a bang/buck, as this will likely be the experimental system for quite a while…

And the fact that in PC land I can actually get a motherboard with more than 4 PCIe16x slots, means that I really have some lee-way in the way I want to build, and if I need a Red-Rocket, I have the space.

But if you buy from MacVidCards on ebay they come pre-flashed.

December 7, 2011 at 3:49 pm in reply to: mouse

I actually really like the Wacom Bamboo pen & touch. The form factor is really nice and small, which replicates mouse movements better than larger tablets, the Touch component lets me pick up the pen and use two fingers for scrolling, and if I just want to quickly touch somehting, I don’t always have to pick up the pen.

As far as mice, As a lefty I have far less choices. But hands down, the Razer Death-Adder, which has a left-handed version. The build quality isn’t fantastic, and they don’t like USB switchers (I’ve gone through 3, but warranty did cover them), but the mouse is so comfortable, and the software lets you get the movement just right.

November 23, 2011 at 2:42 pm in reply to: Why still use 23.976 and 29.97?

As long as you use the “source plays frames at 2997” option there will be no damage, as its not changing any frames, just telling it to play them at a different frame rate.

November 22, 2011 at 1:51 pm in reply to: DaVinci Resolve 8.1 and Lion working well?

I tried lion and was having lots of wierd issues with cs5 and a bunch of kernel panics. So i went back to 10.6.8. But YMMV, I heard that plenty of people are fine, but they tend to be the laptop users…

  • Garage band and pro tools LE did not destroy pro sound, cheap shake / after effects did not destroy pro gfx.

Resolve lite will not destroy pro color grading.

It will however make it very difficult for the middle end post facilities, when they have to compete with cheap boutiques & freelancer who have gone into business for themselves.

But, yes it will drive rates down. Just like FCP drove editor rates down. But color already did that.

November 22, 2011 at 1:33 pm in reply to: Why still use 23.976 and 29.97?

That’s why, unless there are mitigati circumstances, I always recommend shooting 23.98. 23.98can easily be converted to 24 (and therefore 25 & 50i using pull down) and 29.97. It’s the best compromise for a “filmic” look.

However for using fraps, 23.98 might not actually capture the feel of what you’re doing. and you might need to go 720p60 for some video games.

30p though should be easy to covert to 2997 in compressor, just use the “set so frames play at 2997” setting.

And the reason that NTSC is 29.97 and pal is 25 is because the US’ electricity grid is a voltage thing. Original analogue tv’s had to run at the fraction of the timing that your voltage did. And because ac power in the US is not quite 120hz, hence 5994i, 2997, and a much later hack to get film’s 24fps to 29.97, 23.98… Europe design PAL much later and was able to create a higher resolution system.

Just remember that once you kill the process in the activity monitor you’ll need to reboot to get it back on…

October 21, 2011 at 5:19 pm in reply to: Premiere Underpowered …?

I bought the modded GTX 285 from the MacVidCards guys off of eBay, and have been happy, but I don’t have personal experience with the 470. The modification you’re looking for, is the ones modded for OSX.

I have heard positive things about it on the DaVinci boards.

But Windows seems really attractive though, Especially if i’m moving to the Adobe platform. I’ve got a windows 7 machine at home that actually crashes less than my mac pro, but it’s not my main machine.

Let’s see, Cheaper, Better Adobe performance, More Powerful graphic card support, makes it a hard argument to keep working on Apple.

That and the fact that I saw more kernel panics in lion in one week than blue screens in windows 7 in a year, makes me start to seriously look at other options.
