  • Building a Resolve…GT470 or 285

Posted by Joseph Murray on December 19, 2011 at 3:09 pm

I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded from a Macpro 8 core 2.1 to a 12 core 5.1 running Lion in order to migrate from Apple Color to Resolve. I’ve read the various posts and suggestions here and am still a bit confused. A few questions:

I have an Intensity Pro card. Will this work or will I need to upgrade? If so what card?

The computer has a 5770 card and I understand that this must go in place of a GT120 card. Is the GT120 card still the recommend? I thought the new 5770 was a big step up from the GT120card.

DaVinci recommends a GTX 285 but some people are using a GTX470. Opinions?

It seems like the main vendor for these cards is Macvidcards in Los Angeles…unfortunately they are closed for the next 2 weeks. Any other vendors recommended?

Any other info as far as cards into which slots and drivers wold be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Joe

[Joseph Murray] “some people are using a GTX470. Opinions?”

I’m going to take a swing at building a cubix x16 expander with GTX480s flashed by MacVidCards. So far, so good– I at least have system recognition and my MacPro is seeing the ATI5770 and the two 480’s.

Next, tearing out the Kona3 card… Lately, it has become very crashy with Final Cut7 and the Konal plugin is always fingered as the culprit.

Must one flash these cards in order for them to work properly or does one just buy a 470 or 480 and install?

Yeah, I’m just throwing a lot less money at a decent PC motherboard, and I’m going to give windows a try.

I’m looking at putting together a box for ~1200$ that will trounce my Mac. It kinda makes me sad.

I’m looking to build around a multiple set of 460ti’s as a bang/buck, as this will likely be the experimental system for quite a while…

And the fact that in PC land I can actually get a motherboard with more than 4 PCIe16x slots, means that I really have some lee-way in the way I want to build, and if I need a Red-Rocket, I have the space.

But if you buy from MacVidCards on ebay they come pre-flashed.

Definitely not. A stock 470/480 won’t work in a Mac environment unless it is flashed with the appropriate firmware.
