I pretty much have the exact same system, and those are pretty much the results I get.

The big thing just seems to be the amount of CUDA cores. Which frustrates me because…

    Gtx285 – 240 cuda cores – ~400 bux
    Quadro 4000 – 256 cuda – ~850 bux
Gtx 590 (not compatible with macs) 1024 Cuda cores – 700 bux

    Not that I’m bitter.

Seriously though, it’s sad that hackintoshes are the cheapest way to get the best performance. But with my recent positive experiences with windows 7 and cs5.5… I’m starting to hope for windows version of resolve…

July 8, 2011 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Sony PVM-1954Q – Good for SD only or?

Some of those Sony crt’s were really the best things to grade on, even for hd. The problem is finding one that still outputs well. A place I worked for still used them in 2008 but I found that that model was pushing towards the yellows, as if the blue tube was weakening.

Now I find it very hard to feel like I’m grading properly without a large plasma, as you really miss things and don’t get a sense of scale on a 17″, especially for NR.

That said the Flanders are very good.

Yes, but not to get in a pedantic battle, Because the FCP XML format has existed for a while, getting XML support for PPro/Avid should be a big hassle, and because of it’s open nature it should be trivial to get a equivalent that easily works, or is easily hacked to work in Resolve etc…

As far as your other questions, If I was faces with those same issues, I would simply do all the adding/subtracting/ replacing of files in FCP7, and export a new XML into Resolve, every time I needed to make a set of changes. Your color corrections are clip based by default so everything should carry over.

Not so sure about the end of XML. Premiere pro uses XML as well as fcp7, and the beauty of XML is that its an open format. And a lot of places who were on FCP seem to be moving to PP.

I mean hell, EDL’s are still around.

The Track node applies to everything, and is really useful the way it is, if you want to apply a grade to entire project or scene.

  • I told a friend of mine that my next Mac Pro would probably not be a mac pro but a windows box… And he was shocked and didn’t believe me. With so many moving to Premiere and that there are drive solutions to attach mac drives now…

And if Resolve worked on windows, it would be a no brainer. Slam 2 of the latest nVidia cards, liquid cooling, fast CPU, custom rack-mountable cases, more than 4 internal drives… All for a similar price as a Mac Pro? That CUDA also accelerates Premiere?

Starts to make you think… Also, the idea that I will no longer have to wait forever to use modern video cards… REALLY starts to make you think.

June 29, 2011 at 2:55 pm in reply to: DaVinci Resolve 8 released and available

    Questions:

I see the H.264 codec support, are we going to get any reasonable performance out of that, or should that be ignored?

Any reported Database issues between 7 & 8, or any reason what so ever to not upgrade after my current project?

Can Resolve 8 live alongside Resolve 7.0.3, to curtail any possible issues?

Haven’t tested the radeon cards, but the GTX285 rivals Quadro performance, especially when it’s not used as your main gui card.
