  • Has anyone run into this out of memory issue? I just did a 90min feature, I split the sessions into reels but had the whole thing in one project with no issues, perhaps that was an issue of a previous version?

To run a colorist business you have to be just as good at running a business, marketing and networking as you are a colorist. If your clients don’t know your better and cheaper, and that they need to budget for you, that is unfortunately on you. I hate it, and wish I could just focus on coloring as opposed to building websites, giving free demos, negotiating deals, etc… But those are the breaks.

  • I am experiencing similar issues with dv material and 720p30 stuff, playback seems to be ok, but I’m getting weird aspect ratio issues. I’ll see if just outputting a full hd version helps.

I really wish I could justify $1500 to replace my wave. but I have 4-5 other purchases I need to make before that.

  • Why go to all that trouble?

Add the vfx shots in FCP, and export and import a new XML. As you would with new cut.

Damage from the original recording format to the 5d/7d h.264 & the XDCam format has already been done. The very slight damage from going to pro-res HQ will be negligible.

In those kind of situations, that’s often the best way.

Just make sure to be clear with the client, and explain that you could do a full conform, ie change all the frame rates, bake in some effects by hand etc.. But explain and bill them for the time involved. But yeah in those situations often the qt with EDL is the path of least resistance.

  • Just to correct you there a bit sacha, the 490 has 1024 cuda cores, because it’s basically two 480s on one card. The 480 is just slight more cuda cores than the 470,

Right now, I’d build a machine around the flashed 470, with maybe a q4000 instead of the gt120 to drive the displays but only of you are doing a lot of color/premiere/smoke etc.

Why smoke, which I think is built on cuda as well, doesn’t support the 285/470 is a bit baffling.
