Artist MC Color Shift Key
Posted by Vladimir Kucherov on August 4, 2011 at 4:54 pmJust got my MC Color this morning and been playing around with it. Overall very happy with the build and the smaller size. My one question is, is there no way to lock the shift key? It seems like I have to press it before every shifted operation, even if I’m holding it down.
Since node jumping, especially, is a shifted operation, that kind of makes the process a pain in the ass.

August 4, 2011 at 6:11 pmI really wish I could justify $1500 to replace my wave. but I have 4-5 other purchases I need to make before that.

August 4, 2011 at 7:52 pmI don’t know how to old the shift key, but i had a couple questions for you?
1) Do you have heavy latency on the MC color panels? Apple Color is quite quick, but Resolve seems to take a lot more time.
2) Saturation knob stays at 0 when turning it up and down?
3) MC color doesn’t respond after the computer restart?
Please let me know if you or other people have same problems.

August 4, 2011 at 9:32 pm1) I have no lag that I notice, but my panel is connected directly to the Mac via ethernet (not to a router)
2) All knobs seem to work
3) After computer restart I have to manually re-add in EuCon. Not sure why but it seems to work after that.
The shift key behavior is driving me up the wall though, and I’m not sure if I’m just not used to it or something’s going wrong. It constantly gets stuck in a different state from what I expect it to be.

August 5, 2011 at 2:28 amHi, there are shift left and shift right functions and so the current design required the key to be activated prior to the option.

August 5, 2011 at 6:32 amHey Peter,
I noticed there are several functions available that would make sense to have a Caps lock Shift like command, like advancing a frame for example.
Pressing Shift,Function,Shift,Function several times makes it hard to work with.
Would it be possible to either have another button assigned or just simply hold down the key for entering a sequence like SHifthold,Function,Function,Function ?
On the Wave that goes for the ALT key especially, same on the MC.
On the big panel I could think of the edit commands or even Disable all.A slice of color…

August 5, 2011 at 7:19 amHi Peter,
In addition to what Sacha pointed out, I’d like to add that if I try to hold down shift and press a function, things get really screwy. I haven’t nailed down the pattern yet, but sometimes, I can hold shift+ press function, get shift function result, then let go, but “shift” will still be on for my next button press. Other times it doesn’t do that.
I think that is the biggest thing causing some confusion when I’m trying to work quickly.

August 6, 2011 at 4:09 amI have been playing with the MC color for about a week now. There are, without a doubt, some functionality design elements that can be addressed better. From the trackball sensitivity, to the shift key, in addition to some of the menu design and layout.
This controller has a lot of potential compared to the wave. Although, as an aside, I do like the 9 softkeys on the wave.
With respect to the MC color, I would like to see the previous/next frame command move to the shift option and have the next /previous clip as the main button.
Vladimir – I also had the same issue as you that it seems that sometime the shift key is “locked” on some functions and sometimes not, could not figure out yet why.
Do you guys also notice a difference on the sensitivity between the primary tab to the new 3-way color? It looks like the 3-way color wheel has less steps than the primary tab. And the placement of the cursors on the wheel is not necessarily an accurate representation of the color values. Using the mouse or using the controller you get different results (I will post some stills to make more sense of this one).
I will assume that with the euphonix protocol, it will be easy to program it any way you like it?

August 15, 2011 at 6:31 amI prefer MC Color over Wave from purely built quality and feel. Unfortunately, it seems, that BM spent even less time on doing a layout on MC Color, than Wave. Said that, I don’t see requested changes happening any time soon, so I just use Shuttle Pro for extra functions, that difficult or impossible on MC Color, like next/previous event, go to first/ last frame of the event, adding various nodes, dynamic marks etc.

August 15, 2011 at 3:00 pmI was pleasantly surprised to find the “wipe still” knob acting as a shuttle wheel when not in still playback mode.
Also, this might sound silly but I added 2 rubber pads to the 2 shift buttons, and now I can press them with my wrists. This has sped up my work tremendously, since for the most part I don’t have to move my fingers from the buttons I want to press.
