Slightly OT, but hilarious
Posted by John Sellars on August 10, 2011 at 5:02 pmI found an old post on an Indie film-making site that had this link to his colorist webpage, and just had to post it here:

Come back in a few years Mik, when there won’t BE anymore big Hollywood post houses!

August 11, 2011 at 3:55 pmTo run a colorist business you have to be just as good at running a business, marketing and networking as you are a colorist. If your clients don’t know your better and cheaper, and that they need to budget for you, that is unfortunately on you. I hate it, and wish I could just focus on coloring as opposed to building websites, giving free demos, negotiating deals, etc… But those are the breaks.

August 11, 2011 at 6:28 pmyeah, this showed up on the TIG as well. I can appreciate the sentiment. Its hard to generate the markup just to allow the kind of ongoing investment and legwork that is required. Part of this is due to built-in obsolescence — Apple and the Detroit model of pulling a gullible and fashion-obsessed consumer base along, but also drastically understating and oversimplifying the process. Anyone who can push the shifter into “Drive” can win a Grand Prix.
But out of all this, apparently the good news is that sophisticated post is just not required anymore. FCX will analyze all your footage, fix it, decide what’s good and what isn’t, and auto-edit/grade/mix/equalize everything and post it to the net distribution venue of your choice (probably the iTunes/Cloud-thing). Order the new Lamborghini off the proceeds that all those random net-browsers will be pouring into your pocket because its all just pure profit, no standards. That’s how it works, right?

You mean “Old Ben”? Ben Kenobi?

August 15, 2011 at 5:37 amI feel the sentiment, but I had been following his web site for a while. He had been running the same offer of discounted rates to indy filmmakers, blah, blah, blah for at least two years on reduser. Every two months or so, he would run the same advert. His web site and his work hasn’t changed at all in last two years. He hasn’t contributed to Reduser or to Creative Cow at all. I had actually caught him cheating on his before and after looks a while ago. Well, based on all that does it mean, that he doesn’t deserve a living as a colorist? Of coarse not. My point is anyone wanting to do so needs to improve his skills, advertise, network etc. Unfortunately, from what I saw, he didn’t do any of that. He just though, that clients will come to him, because he was cheaper. Wrong! Sooner or later being the cheapest always leads to the exact end we just had witnessed…
