Ohhh, got it.
You can certainly up-rez your sequence. As long as you made sure your import settings were set to 1:1, then you should be golden. Avid is certainly capable of what you are trying to do – its one of the main features.
When you eyeball your footage, what kind of monitor are you looking at?
What was the source of your original files?

I geuss I’m stuck at trying to up-rez your QT files. Are your trying to make them better? If I understand correctly you’re trying to make SD look better than the original?
What was the original source of the files?
What were you setting on import into the Avid?
Sorry for the questions, I’m just trying to get a handle on your question….

I’m not sure you can up-rez a file in Avid – mojo or not.
What benchmark are you using to quantify the quality of the signal?
The Mojo enhances the performance of the CPU and the software. It gives you options for connections other than firewire (SDI or RGB).

I use After Effects for things like that – it’s got a pretty cool way of creating and controlling grids…

The short answer is FM.
Flippin’ Magic.
The long answer is how it’s encoded (variable or constant bit rate), the subject (talking head or lots of action) and even the method by which its viewed (computer or NTSC monitor). The trick is finding what works for you and sticking with it. Even something as mundane as the brand of DVD will affect wether your client can view the product. I’ve used Sorenson presets with a lot of success. The data rate and the I-frame rate are the only thing I’ve changed; I set that to 5500 and 6 to strike a balance between quality and size.
It can be very frustrating. There are times I miss VHS. Your customer copy was going to play in a 1981 VCR and the latest greatest.

We just finished a project where we taped about 35 speeches, each one 55 minutes to an hour in length. We delivered a DVD and a .wmv. Here’s what the work flow looked like. We used XPress Pro almost exclusively, but one or two were done on a MC Meridian system.
-We exported a QT (not reference)same as source file of the speech (no real editing except titles and adding whatever PPT slides the speaker had), and sent it to our encoding machine. Generally speaking, the files were about 10 – 12 gb. We have a mini-network connecting all our production machines.
-Using Sorenson (the full version), we set up a watch folder to encode the QT’s automatically.
-MPEG’s were encoded to a data rate of 5500mbs
-.wmv’s were encoded at the preset 1mbs stream, but I changed the data rate to 1600, and the size was 720×480.
-Using Encore, I built a first play DVD with the .wmv included as an extra file.
What took us 6 months to do last year took a month. The video looked exceptional!

Is AE and Avid on the same machine?
If it is, us same as source QT reference. You can’t get any better then the original file.
If you have to go to another machine, then hopefully you have networked storage, or it’s on a small network. Regardless, you’ll want to use QT same as source.

You’ll find the safe title button in the effects edit mode. I believe you can map the button as well…
