Thanks Jeff for your input. Not too sure it matters so much in this case as it all gets bumped down to 480p. Good to know though, I did not realize it was a lossy format.
    Appreciated.

I downloaded a trial version of Vegas 14 to see if the files would import but the same thing happened. Just audio shows up on the timeline.

The files I have been sent from Hong Kong were shot with a JVC camera in .mov format. Last time I received files like this I transcoded them with the JVC Pro HD Clip Manager. But last time they sent me the SD cards. This time they Dropbox them to me. As a result the transcoder will not import them as it doesn’t see an SD card. I have been transcoding them with Adobe media encoder into mpeg 4 which is working out fine. I guess JVC has it’s own codec inside that .mov wrapper? Anyone else have this problem with JVC .mov files and vegas ?
Incidentally, if you record mpeg 4 with this camera (and I’m sorry I don’t know which camera it is) they work in vegas just fine.

Thank you guys for trying to help with this. Looks like I found the workaround, hassle that it is.

    thanks

QuickTime 7 will not play it. Premier identifies it as a mp4 but I don’t see any other information other than hd 1920×1080 29.97.

Yes I have QuickTime 7 installed. I can drop most .mov files on Vegas timeline but then I get some that will only show the audio. As a matter of fact the recent files I am referring to won’t play in QuickTime player or MPEG streamclip. But they are fine in premier. What version are you guys running?

    HI STEVE,
THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE. I HAVE PRETTY MUCH USED VEGAS 12 WITHOUT THE GPU SELECTED SINCE MY INSTABILITY ISSUES….WHICH HAS HELPED. NOT IN FRONT OF THE MACHINE RIGHT NOW BUT WILL CHECK IT AGAIN TOMORROW WHEN I GET IN. I HAVE AN AMD CARD WHICH I SWITCHED OUT TO AN NVIDEA CARD AND THEN RECENTLY SWITCHED IT BACK AGAIN.
I’M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO ANYMORE.

    thanks

and I thought it was just me having these Vegas 12 issues.
but I see others are still struggling too. I was about to jump ship myself after using Vegas for years. my software crashes when I use new blue for titles so I try to avoid it if possible. other than that it just seems quirkly…if I’m scrubbing the timeline suddenly it will start highlighting sections or the tracks expand for no reason if I’m editing using shortcut keys. ??? weird. I also get occasional crashes.

thanks for the advice Steve, I will check those things you mentioned and see if it helps.

    thanks
