  • SSD Configuration in New Install

Posted by Rick Altizer on September 22, 2012 at 1:59 am

I know the SSD reads much faster than a regular SATA drive.
On a new install, should I

    A) Use the SSD as my main C drive and load all my programs on it
    or
    B) Use the SSD to hold all my project files and load Vegas on a SATA drive (7200 RPM Barracuda)? Once the project is done, move off of the SSD drive and archive.
1)Render to SSD or to a
2)Render to 3rd Drive (SATA) dedicated to renders?

    Thanks!

In general people have recommended that SSD’s be used as the boot drive because it will make your overall system faster which is more benefit for your money.

Most renders are CPU bound so having a fast hard drive for rendering isn’t so much an issue. My old computer had a RAID 0 for editing because I thought I needed it. My new computer has a regular Green hard drive for editing and I really don’t notice any difference in editing speed, probably because I/O wasn’t an issue to begin with.

So I’d say use the SSD as your boot drive. If you find that you need a really fast editing drive for some reason, just create a RAID 0 from regular drives with spinning rotational platters covered with iron oxide. 😉

John is correct here. I have mine as a system drive and another as a swap. The swap is virtually unused because I have 48 Gig of RAM. I am trying to think of a way to redeploy it, like maybe a temp drive. The system is pretty snappy I would be sure to check the firmware version on your drive, if it’s not new. I have had to update mine. Depending on the size of your drive you may wish to change the location of the user files like My Documents, My music, etc. These can grow very large, very quick.

A little help from the techies please.

When I originally set up my windows 7 install I changed the config from non-raid to raid so I could set up a Raid 0 to stripe two internal 500 gb drives together for editing. When I did that I lost the ability to load the os on the ssd. I had to load onto the c drive.

Is there a way to have the os on the ssd and have a raid 0 config for editing?

I thought I could, but noticed that when I attempted to load the os on the ssd it was not listed in windows 7 setup, (also the sdd does not show up in explorer)
however it is listed on the screen when the system boots up.

I’ve been told by some that I would have to change the config in the bios to non-raid to see and use the ssd again but this would take away my raid 0 config.(it was originally set up non raid with the os on the ssd when I bought the computer )

If that is the case what would be the best hard drive set up.
do most of you use a raid or non raid config?
I am editing avchd with vegas 11 (a somewhat buggy vegas 11)

    would appreciate your thoughts guys.
I have an i7 Quad core running win 7 with 24 gigs of ram.

    Jon,

I will need to know your motherboard model and what sata ports you are connecting your devices to.

I will try to help you out.

Jeff here is the info about the computer I bought.
I changed the graphic card to an Nvidia to see if it helped stablize SVP 11. would have bought a better one but the box isn’t big enough for the bigger cards. (didn’t really make a difference)

I’m sorry Jon, It’s been one of those days. I will do my absolute best to look at it tomorrow. After noon I will be out of touch for about 10 days.

    Jon,

Looking over the board I would connect my raid to the black connectors (sata2) and my SSD to one of the Blue ones(sata3).

You may have to eneable a driver like Marvel for the raid to work on the balck connectors. Check through your bios.

They should all be visible inside windows after diskmgmt.msc runs and initializes all drives. Remember to move your My Documents and junk so not to fill up the SSD.

I’ll be offline for most of the next 10 days. If you need more help, start another thread. Older threads don’t get looked at as much because they’re assumed to be closed.
