The main difference between Preference Manager and the competing apps is that Preference Manager manages preferences for ALL apps in the studio, not just Final Cut Pro.

You can also lock preferences to prevent them from becoming corrupt – I’m not aware of any other app that has this feature.

It’s free so you’ve got nothing to lose by trying it out.

And if you opt for the (paid) FCS Maintenance Pack and Network Admin tools, you can schedule tasks, manage all of your preferences across a network and sync between computers.

(note: I am the developer of Preference Manager)

This is a hang, not a crash. Crash Analyzer doesn’t support hangs so take whatever it says with a grain of salt 🙂

“I have no idea what ProKit is…”

It handles the interface for Apple’s Pro Applications and iLife suite. Apple seems to have added some new features for iLife ’11 that have broken Final Cut Studio.

FCS Maintenance Pack does not perform memory or hardware testing.

“Can you imagine a brand new 2011, 12core MacPro with 16GB RAM crashing because of a full size Jpeg? I very politely asked for a new tech guy … for “fresh perspective”. Never got one.”

Images larger than 4000 pixels in width or height can in fact cause crashes.

If you have other Apple Pro Apps on your system such as Logic, Shake, Aperture or iMovie, FCS Remover will ask you if you definitely want to remove shared files otherwise it could break those apps.

However, if you are reinstalling Final Cut Studio anyway, that doesn’t matter because the files will be reinstalled. What I’m guessing happened is that FCS Remover asked you if you wanted to remove shared files and you clicked no, hence why you can’t reinstall Final Cut Studio.

What it does is it looks at all the files within the project and tries to open each one. If any fail to open or crash the helper process, it flags them up.

December 10, 2010 at 2:26 am in reply to: Missing Edit Tab in FCP 7

Sometimes I get weird drawing glitches on menus, such as two applications’ menus being drawn over the top of each other.

However, issues like these are purely cosmetic and it’s simply a matter of cmd-tabbing away and then back again or clicking on a menu item and moving the mouse horizontally.

Do these suggestions fix the issue or is your Edit menu actually missing?
