It could be the graphics card drivers aren’t right. What are the system specs. someone out here will have the same video card and a working driver.

What you are attempting is not pixel aspect ratio, but dimension rescaling.
Pixel aspect ratio is the mathematical stretching of a square pixel to something wider or taller than itself to produce say SD/DV anamorphic 16:9.
There will always be a loss of something ad you are either forfeiting pixels to squeeze down to the lower line count or maintain the integrity of the pixel and lose some picture so you use the clean 480 lines from 576 and lose the remaining lines.
What I feel is unclear is your training behind going from 576 to 480 lines. Be definition you are attempting to conform a superior line count of the PAL SD/DV standard and degrade it down to the NTSC SD/DV standard.
If you want to export in square pixel aspect ratio then you will need to work out the math. 720×576 would come out to 1024×576. But as you are then stretching the pixels to make new pixels that are a combination of side pixels there will be some softening. Not a great deal, but some.

Why not drag n drop one of the clips on top of the new item icon at the bottom of the project panel to get a matching sequence to the footage?

Im sorry you feel that way Mike, but Pro Res is owned by Apple. And they decide whether or not anything outside of Apple products can use the compressor end of the codec. They have allowed users to the decompressor, but not the code so everyone has to reverse engineer it, which is extremely hard.
If you are having trouble with your system being able to playback DSLR footage the way you want it to, then upgrade your system or live with editing in a lower playback quality. Adobe have recommended system requirements so users know that they need a particular spec’d system to get particular results.
I can understand you aren’t getting the results you may have been excited about or felt would solve a problem, but your remarks about Adobe not living up to their end of things by not incorporating ProRes is misguided and naive of the processes behind these ‘deals’ taking place.
You haven’t posted your specs yet or whether you have tried to use the lower res playback settings. DSLR is HD and H.264 is power consuming, but the Adobe path requires less than any other system so far needs in order to play with it natively.

What is copied over to AE is the full clip as the source. That is expected behaviour. What you may be missing when Pasting the copied clip into a new comp, the clip pastes in as a precomposed nest in the new comp. Select the layer and hold alt the tap the home key. It will push the in point of the nest to the head of the composition where you should be able to see the in and out section of what you copied over.
I just tried it and it works. This is how CS3 used to work too. there is a composition with the same name as the clip, that is the entire clip. thats the way it works.
If you want to only have a small section then render it out as a cut out clip. Going uncompressed would be best for maintaining quality, but might hurt in file size.

I can offer a solution to your after effects situation.
In ppro CS5 you can select a clip right click on it and “replace with after effects composition” it will do what you are wanting for you and add the dynamically linked comp in place of the original clip in the timeline.
Not sure why the DV signal is not being scene detected? Are you sure the camera was buttoned on and off. (as per the way it recognized a ‘scene’?)
Are you copying the edited clip from the time line and pasting it into an open comp? It sounds like you might be making in out selections in the source monitor and copying it as a source file, not a cut down clip that sits in the timeline? I may be misinterpreting your explanation…

Hi cliff this is an old problem in QT.
It has trouble with the aspect ratio of DV files and looks at then as square pixels so it looks like anamorphic 4:3 because that is what it is in sq pixels.
VLC can understand the aspect ratio info and shows you what the shape would look like on a widescreen TV.

Have u made the dimensions as an export setting or have u made a new sequence and nested it in to it?
Keep in mind that the original project is HD which is widescreen & then 320×240 is 4:3 which will either make letterboxing or mean you lose the sides of the original frame.
Could you describe the way you have setup the export and project for the export.

More than one way to skin a cat.
1. Lock all the video layers, by holding shift and selecting the lock on one of the video tracks. (They all lock). Then Select all and only the audio will be selected then hit delete. Hold shift and click on the locked icon in one of the video clips and you’re back again, but without any audio. 🙂
2. Zoom all the way out with the \ key. Hold the Alt Key and drag and box (marquee) selection across the audio portion of the clips. This will only select what your box has inside it. Once all the audio clips are selected hit delete.
I don’t think there is any faster way than these two methods. Which should only take about 5secs away from your life, which I’m sure you won’t miss.
