I’m sorry to inform you but the reason you are seeing a small window of video inside a black border is that you are putting an SD timeline, which you worked in, into a HD export.
Effectively you are getting the correct result with the sequence you worked in.
Can you clarify that your material is actually HD and the specs of the clips themselves. Did you shoot tapeless or on HDV tape or similar and ingest?
Also there are some options to get it out to HD from the SD if you are actually stuck with it, but the results will be less than pleasing. Best to know that this options is the last resort.

1st lets confine the perception that because it is redline that it NEEDS render. It may not. You could highly likely get realtime playback with a drop in the fractional playback quality so either 1/2 or 1/4 on HD material on a decent machine. FCP is different. Red line means you MUST render to get any form of playback.
2nd, not sure why you are experiencing the difference in the freshly imported clip Vs the one that came with the one that is connected to the original CS4 sequence.
The cache concept is about perhaps the clips are looking at the cache from the original CS4 project which wouldn’t have had realtime playback without lowering the quality to Draft or actually render and its still associating the clips with their original “not CS4 supported” cache?
I would try to give this a try.
Clean the Cache via the Preferences and restart PPro.
See if this fixes the original edit being copied and pasted into a new Native Preset Sequence.
If not, try to select all project media and set it to offline, but to keep the media (DO NOT DELETE IT).
Save and restart PPro. Then open it and hopefully you will be asked to reconnect the media.
I am hoping that the clips will be reconnected either manually with a direction to one of the clips, which will automatically find the rest of the clips based on the location of the first, and think it’s imported the clips new.

Hi Jon,
Can you tell us if you are copying and pasting clips from the original edit sequence into a new DSLR sequence and still seeing the red bar.
Are the clips you edited using any effects or filters that may be triggering the red line. In other words the edit you brought from CS4 is not just cuts with original clips.
CS4 did not work with DSLR media, that began in CS5. The sequence you have brought in would most likely be using the same preset design as it was in CS4 which was not based on native support of DSLR.

I tend to use a Title and shape tool to draw out the Mask then use the Track Matte Effect on the clip I want to mask, and point to the track with the title on it (over the clip) with settings on Alpha, then I can hit the track matte invert to invert the matte.

Technically, making AVCHD footage into ProRes footage won’t “clean” up the quality of grain or sharpness etc.
AVCHD footage doesn’t look so nice when edited natively in anything less than full playback resolution.
When it is in pause the quality set to Full should show the quality of the material.
Export it if you are really concerned it shouldn’t lose any quality at the export stage than that if it was ProRes as the best source for export is always the original material, which PPro uses.
Let us know what it looks like after an export – If its rubbish, chances are the source footage is rubbish and ProRes-ing it wouldn’t “fix” it.

IF that is the reason you are using it, you could use the track matte option and have a title draw up a shape, then move and resize the matte clip.
Do you know how to use the track matte effect?

Sadly I can confirm that you have indeed found a Mac only Bug. Crop behaves unexpectedly and differently to the PC version of the same plugin.

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishformI too have filed a bug report on this so if you do one too, the more the higher the possibility of it being brought forward to a fix.
They do get a massive listing and only have so many hours/hands to fix them.

Are you wanting to do this with still images or video. This clip you have sampled has used a single image, which looks to have cut out the heads in Photoshop.
To do this sort of thing with video would require a lot of work as there are over 20 frames per second. In this case you could use the Roto Brush that came out in CS5 to cut out a lot of the manual rotoscoping (tracing around the edges of what you want to keep).

I don’t have CS4 installed anymore, but I just did a test with the CS5.5 version and it operates the same as my initial testing did back with CS5, where complaints where still coming in saying it was working.
I’d really like to see the way the problem is happening.

I did make the video with the PC version. My Mac is currently in BootCamp mode runnig PC and downloading something (huge) so I won’t be able to check it for a little while.
I am using CS5.5, what version are you using?

PS: Yes there are a very small amount of differences between the Mac and PC versions related to the list of effects, but they aren’t particularly common ones.
