  • Dragging the crop region/window

I’m watching a tutorial series in which the instructor is clearly dragging the crop window (with the crop effect selected) around the scene. When I try this after selecting the crop effect I end up moving the whole clip, or if I select one of the handles on the crop region it moves only that point. Is there some modifier key to drag the crop window? The adobe help doesn’t contain any mention of this, but I’m watching him do this in the videos constantly.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

With the clip selected in the timeline and the Effect Control Panel open showing the Crop Effect you need to select the Crop Effect Name itself. This will select the crop points on the layer which you can grab the corners in the Program Monitor Panel.

    Hope this helps.

The same technique works with selecting the “Motion” property of a clip then you can manipulate the scale position and rotation of the clip in the Program Monitor Panel.

Thanks for the suggestion Jon. I click on the crop effect name, and then I can drag each of the crop handles one at a time, to resize and move the region by each handle. He’s dragging the entire crop region as one unit, so its size/ratio is unchanging. So he’s dragging the fixed size crop window around the scene to reveal different aspects of the frame, such as a face or a gray card. so he’s grabbing and dragging the crop region around the window as a whole, rather then one point at a time.

Let me know if there’s something I’m missing in your reply!

I’m watching the video at a friends home and it’s part of a membership site he belongs, so I don’t want to republish anything, but I did capture a very small clip of him dragging the crop region and posted it here for you to view:

    Hey Kevin!

    David,

It’s just what I explained in an earlier post except you would just grab the inside of the cropped area. I have provided a video clip to demo the process 🙂

    Hi Jon,

Thakns for the video demo. My problem is, when I drag the inside of the crop area, it drags the clip to which the crop is applied, rather than dragging the crop area region. If I lock the clip, then the effect is not selectable either. I’m wondering if this is a mac/pc thing. Are you using a PC to do this demonstration? I’ve noticed a few things in the video course that we’re viewing that are pc options that aren’t available in the mac version of premiere pro, or at least some of the effects/plug-ins.

I did make the video with the PC version. My Mac is currently in BootCamp mode runnig PC and downloading something (huge) so I won’t be able to check it for a little while.

I am using CS5.5, what version are you using?

    Cheers JB

PS: Yes there are a very small amount of differences between the Mac and PC versions related to the list of effects, but they aren’t particularly common ones.

Sorry for the double post, I’m still in moderation (how long does that take to come out of?) so if I try and make a second post it modifies or addends the first post.

So, my results with the same technique are shown in the video below. I’m definitely interested to find out if this is perhaps a quirky thing of pc/mac. Regardless, it would be helpful and interesting to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks again Jon and Kevin for all your efforts! Here’s my video:
