  • Time Remapping and Keyframes Don’t Work in CS4

Posted by Emily Prescott on November 12, 2009 at 12:02 am

I’ve used Premiere Pro CS3 countless times before I got the CS4 version. I had no problems with it. In CS4, however, there are quite a few things that I definitely don’t like, because it ruins my work and precious time. First, I had problems with how to export my sample video in HD; took me hours to finally figure it out. Second, when I’m all set and done with the settings, I got ready to work on another project, and then I encountered another problem — time remapping and keyframes. In CS3, time remapping and keyframes are my friends, they work flawlessly together. That’s why I often do it, because it makes my work a little better. I tried that in CS4, and nothing happened.

I have this short clip situated in timeline. I previewed it in the program monitor, it was okay. I put keyframes for the scale size and opacity, so far so good. But when I stretch the time using time remapping (without the keyframes), it slowed the time of the clip and I’m happy with that, however, the problem is that when I finally put the keyframes back (scale size and opacity), the video remained in its original condition. Apparently, the keyframes didn’t work its magic on the clip. I checked the effects panel and I saw that, without looking at the program monitor, it was working fine (the numbers were changing). But watching the program monitor, the supposedly result of the keyframes didn’t work.

So, if I just wanna do the time remapping, then I have no problems, but when I’ll add keyframes, then I have to think of something so that I’d put it back to normal just like in CS3.

And that is why I really need your help with this, guys. Please, any thoughts?

Whenever I change the speed of a clip the opacity keyframes dont function. Whatever opacity is set on the start of the frame remains for the entire frame. Are you having this same issue/is this what you are referring to?

Unfortunately this seems to be a bug. A good workaround would be to use the “Transform” Effect found in Video Effects > Distort. Hopefully Adobe will fix this.

I hate this bug! Why have the features if you can’t have them working at the same time. Hopefully Adobe will have this fixed in CS5…

Anyway, a good tip to get the opacity to work is to include a bar of black video (or color matte) on top and change the opacity there.

Obviously, this hasn’t been fixed in CS5, because I have the same problem. I can’t believe that such an easy problem hasn’t been fixed yet.

I’m seriously starting to doubt whether it is just my workflow that is wrong. But then again, I tried every single approach without success. Furthermore, it magically works on some clips, but then on other clips it doesn’t!

It is just impossible to combine time remapping with other effects, which is of course very silly. So far, I’ve had mixed results:
    – When applying extra effects to a remapped clip, the full clip just shows the first frame
    – When applying extra effects to a remapped clip, it shows the remapping and extra effects. But the extra effects don’t appear corresponding to where I put the keyframes. Somehow it also seems to remap the effects. To be clear, it doesn’t matter in this case I organise the effects layers, remapping is always above other layers.
    – Sometimes it just magically, unexplainably works…

I’m having the same problem and it’s driving me nuts! I ponied up the money for CS5 in hopes this silly bug would be squashed and, to my amazement, it still crawls.

Once I’ve done time remapping, motion and opacity (possibly others) keyframes don’t work. I know about the workaround using a new sequence but that’s arduous since I can’t work directly with the time keyframes anymore.

Anybody know of a better workaround? Or is Adobe addressing it?

    Thanks,

I have a feeling there has been a misunderstanding of how to use the time remapping feature at the sequence “clip” level.

The key frames themselves don’t affect speed. Set the points at the start and end of where you want to affect speed and then grab the band (line) between the key frames. Moving it up or down affects the speed.

I’m having the same problem. Jon are you saying that people aren’t using the time remapping function in the correct way and that’s why opacity and position keyframes don’t work? I can’t work out what I’m doing wrong here.

I don’t have CS4 installed anymore, but I just did a test with the CS5.5 version and it operates the same as my initial testing did back with CS5, where complaints where still coming in saying it was working.

I’d really like to see the way the problem is happening.

I’m still seeing this problem in CS5.5. The only fix I’ve found is to do my time remapping then nest that clip. Then you can apply keyframes like scaling and positioning in your original timeline.

Ok this is really irritating me. I am having this problem in CS6!!, how is this not fixed, and I went back into CS5.5 and it still occurs.

What it is for me is:

I have remapped the timing of a clip at several points, it speeds up and slows down great. What I am trying to do his blend to frames together from different clips to make it look like one continus shot. To do this I need to crop out some of the edges of both clips, scale up on one in the beginning and have it rotate to -2, and then back to 0.

The problem I have is keyframing is completely broken for any function. It will ONLY use the settings of the LAST KEYFRAME and not actually properly keyframe any effect such as scaling from 150% down to 100% or cropping an edge form 33% back to 0%. It is driving me insane and I have no idea what to do.
