Have you considered using instead a Sony M25 with an HD-Connect MI from Convergent Design? Same results, lots cheaper.

    Hi Arthur,
Todd is correct that the 24F from the Canon won’t play in any deck/camera but a Canon. Any other format will work in the Sony Decks (M15, M25, 1500).
We have talked to a lot of people that purchase the Canon HV20 to use as an edit feeder. Its true that it has an HDMI output. We make a converter called HD-Connect MI that converts from HDMI to HD-SDI and also does RS-422 to 1394 command conversion. Its fairly cheap at $595 and would also work with the Sony M25 deck, which has HDMI output.

There are a number of viable workflows here that give similar results, but a couple considerations need to be taken.
The advantage of capturing directly into uncompressed or prores is time and integration of other HD-SDI sources (among other reasons): assume 1 hour tape
uncompressed/prores capture (via analog or HD-SDI through a converter): 1 hour for capture (encodes to prores on the fly), editing in prores is realtime and no output render time needed (for most effects) if going back to HD-SDI output
Native HDV capture with drop into prores timeline when editing is finished:
1 hour capture + time for render to prores (not done during capture, at least 1 hour) + time for rendering effects (variable).

Workflow 1: Analog component out to HD-SDI using a converter or capture card conversion.
Advantage: This is a great, inexpensive way to get to uncompressed video or prores on the fly, especially if your capture card already has component input.
Issues: Analog conversion losses (take a look at this video that shows the difference between all digital capture (via HDMI in this case, but via firewire is the same result) and analog capture: https://convergent-design.fileburst.com/AvD.wmv
Another issue is handling the audio and timecode/deck control.

Workflow 2: HDV to HD-SDI converter (HD-Connect SI or HD-Connect MI)
Advantage: no analog conversion losses, easy connections enable audio conversion along with deck control (through RS-422) and timecode. Realtime scaling to 720p/1080i, standard def.
Issues: Additional Cost (we’re working on that, the HD-Connect MI is down to $595)

Workflow 3: native HDV with drop into prores timeline once editing is finished.
    Advantage: Most inexpensive solution.
Disadvantage: additional time is required for render to pro res

Each workflow would only have 1 transcode to prores. Analog capture would give the worst results with native HDV and HDV to HD-SDI conversion giving the same results (quality wise).

Hopefully this is helpful. Let me know if I goofed up anything.

    Hi Ernie,
Take a look at the Convergent Design SD-Connect. It offers all the analog I/O along with SDI I/O as well. It converts the video/audio to either DV over 1394 or uncompressed over 1394 with our drivers for FCP.
We offer a 15 day free evaluation.

    Hi Ajith,
Convergent Design is about to release a product called HD-Connect LE which will do the HDV to HD/SD-SDI conversion in realtime from final cut pro or the camera directly. Go to our website for more information:

July 6, 2005 at 1:46 pm in reply to: BETA SP TAPES TO DIGITAL

Another converter to consider is the Convergent Design SD-Connect. It can convert the BetaSP footage to DV or to uncompressed with final cut pro. It has 12 bit analog to digital and digital to analog converters to achieve 10 bit video quality. (You need more than 10 bits of sampling accuracy to actually achieve 10 bit video.) It also has 24 bit balanced analog audio I/O and RS-422 control to control the deck and get the timecode.
We currently offer a 15 day free evaluation.

  • Hi Roman,
The Convergent Design SD-Connect supports Avid Xpress. It is a video transcoder that will convert the video to DV for use with Xpress. SD-Connect features composite, component, s-video, sdi with embedded audio, AES/EBU, and balanced analog audio I/O. It also features RS-422 control with frame accurate insert/assemble edits among a large number of other features.
Check out our website for more information:

    Hi Nick,
Have you considered other SDI to/from DV converters? Convergent Design makes SD-Connect which is a dv over firewire or uncompressed over firewire converter with SDI with embedded audio, component, composite, s-video, balanced analog audio, and AES/EBU I/O. It also has RS-422 control with frame accurate insert/assemble editing.
We offer a 15 day free evaluation if you would like to try it.

May 25, 2005 at 6:24 pm in reply to: Best way to digitize Beta SP?

    Hi Eyal,
Convergent Design makes a transcoder called SD-Connect that can digitize the beta SP to 10 bit video and 24 bit audio. The SD-Connect can transcode to DV over firewire or uncompressed over firewire with Premiere Pro.
The SD-Connect also offers RS-422 control of the beta deck including frame accurate insert/assemble editing.

  • You should also consider the Convergent Design SD-Connect. It has component I/O and balanced analog XLR audio I/O to DV or uncompressed over firewire with Premiere. It also has RS-422 control including frame accurate insert/assemble editing and batch capturing.
We have a UVW-1800 here that we test with premiere on a regular basis and it works great. Currently, we are finishing up the development of uncompressed 8 bit or 10 bit video/audio over firewire with premiere. We demoed this at NAB.
The SD-Connect has 12 bit analog to digital and digital to analog video converters to achieve true 10 bit quality.
We also offer a 15 day free evaluation. Take a look at our website for more info:
