I need to transfer some beta sp tapes (via a UVW-1800) for use in final cut. What would be the best ‘converter’ to use, and the best fc codec to get as much ‘resolution’ as possible?

Get yourself an external box like the AJA Io LA which allows you to capture uncompressed via Firewire 400.

Or you can opt for an internal capture card like the AJA Kona or Aurora Pipe series.

Really Good quality is the Apple 8bit uncompressed. Best quality is the Apple 10bit uncompressed. Although Aurora has even better 8bit and 10 bit codecs. You’ll need at least a Firewire 800 drive to capture uncompressed resolutions.

You need a card or device that takes the component output of the BetaSP deck – so, one of the Decklink cards, an Aurora Card, an AJA-IO will all work for you.

BetaSP, especially from an 1800 doesn’t have too much resolution to begin with, but as it’s a highly compressed analogue format, you should capture it “uncompressed” so to avoid adding any digital artifacts to the BetaSP’s analogue artifacts and to maintain the quality it has.

Thanks, I’ll check AJA out. Is this a better unit than the DATAVIDEO DAC-10 — I can’t find out whether the DAC-10 allows for uncompressed video conversion.

Step one: If you sincerely are concerned about resolution and signal to noise then do not use the UVW-1800 vtr. A better choice is a PVW or the best is BVW series betacam sp studio vtr’s.

You can use 10,20,or even 24 bit video codecs but none will make up for the quality you thru away from the beginning by starting with the 1800.

The DAC transcodes the Component signal into DV signal. So for SP beta you are going from a 4:1 compression down to 5:1 for DV. Get a card as suggested try Decklink SP for under $600US. Then you can go to 8 bit on your internal G5 second drive. It’s going to cost you what ever you decide to do. If DV quality is fine you could hire one of the new J3 Sony that plays SPBeta tapes and spits out a DV signal for your computer. This would be cheapest option.

If you’re based in the UK, we offer a complete Capture service which ensures the files are in the correct format and ready to start editing.

I’ve found that this saves loads of time when it comes to the Online as the media gets batch captured smoothly as the Timecode etc was set up correctly at the beginning of the project.

I’d be happy to do you a deal 🙂

Another converter to consider is the Convergent Design SD-Connect. It can convert the BetaSP footage to DV or to uncompressed with final cut pro. It has 12 bit analog to digital and digital to analog converters to achieve 10 bit video quality. (You need more than 10 bits of sampling accuracy to actually achieve 10 bit video.) It also has 24 bit balanced analog audio I/O and RS-422 control to control the deck and get the timecode.
