    I’m building out a new system and wondering … ingest HDV natively and transcode to ProRes 422? …or go with a Convergent-Design box that will convert Firewire to HD/SD-SDI? Is there an advantage to doing it this way? And could a dual 2.66 core 2 duo machine encode to ProRes 422 on-the-fly?

    I just want to get the best picture quality and get around the long-GOP nightmare.

    Any recommendations/preferences between the AJA and BMD cards appreciated.

    I currently convert all HDV to DVCPro HD during ingest by taking the Component output of my Sony M15U and converting that to SDI using an AJA HD10AVA converter box. That connects to my Kona 3 and I’m capturing via SDI.

    I have not installed FCS 2 on our main edit system yet, but will see if it makes sense to capture to ProRes or not vs. DVCPro HD. I’ll definitely file a report at some point and let y’all know what I think.

    Firewire to HD SDI to…? Gonna need a capture card for that. Why not get one that connects directly to the camera? Kona 3 or LH if it has HD SDI outs or Component, and INTENSITY if it has HDMI out. Decklink claims that you can capture ProRes with the INTENSITY card…

    yes I would install a HD/SD-SDI card. I take it you like the Blackmagic card vs Kona? Would there be an advantage to capturing this way instead of transcoding? Any loss of quality there?

    sorry, forgot to add that right now I have the Sony Z1 which only has Firewire out, not HDMI. So I’m kinda limited, that’s why I would perhaps get the Convergent-Design box to convert.

    I prefer the Kona cards. I just mention the Intensity because it is inexpensive…but only works with HDMI. The Intensity Pro has Component and Composite…fyi.

    Firewire to HD SDI…didn’t knew it existed. Are you SURE you don’t have Component outs on that camera?

    Yes, there’s a component output on the Z1. So, don’t really need the extra box do I, if used with the Kona card?

    Regardless of what you do with Firewire/SDI, that camera has component out, I’ve used it before.

    I have an LH, and am buying an HDV camera (renting is such a pain in the ass) so I’ve posted some questions about all this especially in light of ProRes and FCP6 etc. There are a couple of other discussions going on about the same things, in any event, I ain’t spending 800 or so bucks for a converter box I may not need of any kind until I get my camera, my Studio 2 upgrade and have tried all the swell options being tossed around here. It’s looking like no additional converters will be necessary, but we’ll see…

    As a side note, it’s been pointed out to me that the LH is a damn good converter on it’s own, so I’m gonna try component to that, and then letting FCP6 upconvert from native HDV to ProRes and see what’s what.

    how did you get audio out of the Z1 (RCA) to the card (XLR)?
