    > How about Satish’s Frameserver?

A frameserver will only send one track. It is the same as rendering to a file and using that file in After Effects. I assume that Ayodele wants to color grade individual events which the frameserver cannot supply. It’s not the same as using AAF which preserves all the edits on all of the tracks.

No, it is not truly lossless. Vegas will “smart-render” m2t files which means that if you didn’t apply any FX to the source on the timeline, it will copy the raw source footage to the target file “as is” with no loss of quality. If, however, you apply any FX, it will have to recompress every frame in order to process the FX and that is a lossy transfer. It should still look darn good even if it has to recompress. You would have to recompress over and over for a few generations before you would see any loss in quality.

If you want to take a snapshot, just use the snapshot button above the Vegas preview window. It will snap the quality of the preview so make sure you have it set to Best (Full) and you might also want to temporarily set your project to progressive so that the image is deinterlaced for you. Otherwise you should deinterlace it in Photoshop after the fact.

    > I don’t want any quality loss so for best case I wish to render back to m2t. Is that possible?

Yes, use the MainConcept MPEG-2 render type using the HDV 1080-60i template and that will create an m2t file. If you didn’t shoot 60i use HDV 1080-50i or whatever template matches your footage.

    > I shoot 60i with high frame rates (up to 1/2000th) to create Slow Motion.

I’m sure you mean shutter speed because the frame rate is still 30 frames as 60 fields. The reason you use a high shutter speed is to make sure each frame has minimal blur which makes your slow motion look cleaner but does not create slow motion all by itself. You are describing it as if you are over cranking when you’re not.

    > Then Drop my footage into a 23.98 timeline. I’ve read all the FCP users say they deinterlace? Does Sony Vegas Pro automatically do that?

Yes, Vegas will automatically deinterlace the footage for you. I would also go into the event properties and Disable Resample. This will give you smoother slow motion because it will be like you overcranked 24p footage to 30p. In other words, by default, Vegas will try and fit the 30 frames into 24, but by disabling resample, it will only use the first 24 frames for frames 1 – 24, then frame 1 of the next 24 will be frame 25 from the original footage. This will give you a little extra slowness and keep Vegas from making phantom frames to inverse telecine the 60i footage. (it won’t inverse telecine at all which is what you want)

    > …or toggle with the “composting mode” on the timeline the rain clip is on.

…and for effects like rain and snow, I find that Screen is the best compositing mode to use. This removes the black quite nicely and blends the rain or snow with the video.

You can get a liquid effect by using a Bump Map driven by a Noise Texture from generated media. Animating the noise texture would animate the ripples of the liquid. You cannot have it morph up someones arm in Vegas alone. That would require a 3D application and particle generator to simulate the liquid and a match moving program to integrate it back with the original footage. Maybe you could fake it with 2D masking? It wouldn’t look as good but it might work.

All you need to do is backup your media library. By default it’s in My Documents \ Sony Media Libraries in a file called: Default.medialib. If you created any additional media libraries you must backup those files as well. Then once you restore your PC, just place the media libraries back.

January 23, 2009 at 1:39 am in reply to: Using Sony Vegas on External hard Drive

The Vegas installation is tightly tied to the windows registry of the computer you install it on. Moving the drive to another computer would be useless. It would simply tell you that the installation is corrupt and to re-install it. Besides, Vegas requires activation so you need to install and activate it on every computer you use it on within the limits of the license agreement.

January 22, 2009 at 10:45 pm in reply to: loss of audio with Vegas 7

    > Actually I think I confused you.

    Yea, I’m still confused. 🙁

Let’s recap: You have AVI footage from the camera. You edited the AVI’s with Vegas 4. You rendered to MPEG1. If you open the original Vegas 4 project in Vegas 7 you can only hear a few seconds of audio. Doesn’t this original project have the original AVI files in it? and if so, what codec do they use? If not, then what does the Vegas 4 project have in it? If the MPEG1 files, then I can’t imagine why Vegas 7 can’t play an MPEG1 file.
