Convert 60i to 24P
I think I’ve figured this out BUT, need some expert advice….
I shoot 60i with high frame rates (up to 1/2000th) to create Slow Motion. Then Drop my footage into a 23.98 timeline. I’ve read all the FCP users say they deinterlace? Does Sony Vegas Pro automatically do that?

ive tried many many many different techniques to try and get the smoothest slowest possible slow motion you can get with a dvx and they all failed me except for this one that i am about to share with you guys i will put up a clip of this momentarily
(this will only work with interlaced video)
ok so the first thing your going to want to do is turn the progressive scan off and shoot this at 60i with a shutter of 1/2000(make sure you have tons of light)
next step is to open up final cut and make a new sequence and change the editing time base to 23.98
nest import the footage into final cut with the basic DV-NTSC48khz setting
(make sure when logging the clip you name it something so that you can find the clip later)now open up Cinema tools and open the clip in cinema tools and conform the clip to 23.98fps
next import your now conformed clip into your final cut 23.98 sequence
copy the clip and place it right under the existing clip
add a de-interlacing filter to both the top and bottom clip the top clip being upper and the bottom clip being lower
add a blink filter to the top clip and make sure the first two boxes are at 1 and the last box is at 0
slow both clip to 50% render and enjoy your super smooth slow motion

I’m sure you mean shutter speed because the frame rate is still 30 frames as 60 fields. The reason you use a high shutter speed is to make sure each frame has minimal blur which makes your slow motion look cleaner but does not create slow motion all by itself. You are describing it as if you are over cranking when you’re not.

Yes, Vegas will automatically deinterlace the footage for you. I would also go into the event properties and Disable Resample. This will give you smoother slow motion because it will be like you overcranked 24p footage to 30p. In other words, by default, Vegas will try and fit the 30 frames into 24, but by disabling resample, it will only use the first 24 frames for frames 1 – 24, then frame 1 of the next 24 will be frame 25 from the original footage. This will give you a little extra slowness and keep Vegas from making phantom frames to inverse telecine the 60i footage. (it won’t inverse telecine at all which is what you want)

Hi John, i was hoping you could help me. I’m looking for the best way to deinterlace 1080i footage from my HVR-A1. I’ve tried setting my project settings to progressive, fields to blend, render to pregressive. Is there a better way? I’ve seen an After Effects post where someone made a png file where one field was black and the other field was transparent, used it to mask one field, so a duplicate track underneath with its field order reversed would give you a progressive frame, something like that. Also a post from DSE saying duplicate a track and move one event one half a frame and rendering to 60P. This level of digital video is still beyond me a little at least. Got any ideas that may help? Track 1=Main video/Opacity set to 50%
Track 2=Main video/Opacity at 100%
Track 1 is offset by half a frame.
Render to 60p HD for editing, or render this to 23.976 HD for editing, depending on which is your ultimate goal. Movement/how this was shot will play a big role in whether going straight to 24p vs 60p is your best option. Experiment with high/low motion scenes.Douglas Spotted Eagle
