The DV signal is already compressed on the tape. There is nothing you can do to get better quality. Firewire isn’t like analog capture. You really aren’t “capturing”. You are simply copying the file bit-for-bit as it appears on the tape. It is more like a file transfer and it is 100% lossless. What is in the DV AVI file is exactly what’s on the tape.

Vegas is correct. NTSC DV Widescreen is 720×480 with a PAR of 1.2121 (not quite 16:9). Set your project to NTSC DV Widescreen setting and render with the NTSC DV Widescreen template and everything should match. You may have slight black pillarboxes which can be fixed by rendering with the Stretch to Fill Frame option.

It depends on what type of disc you are creating. You cannot place HD media on a standard definition DVD.
Are you making a DVD to play on set-top DVD players or are you trying to create a hybrid Blu-ray Disc on plain red-laser DVD media to be played in a Blu-ray player or PS3?
The answer to that question will determining what you can place on the disc.

If you are trying to make a standard definition DVD render the video using the MainConcept MPEG-2 file type with the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream template (or PAL). Then render the audio using the Dolby Digital AC-3 file type with the appropriate template for your project (stereo or 5.1)

Rendering uncompressed or to a lossless codec like HuffYUV or Lagarith (both free 3rd party codecs) will give the best quality.

Yes, Vegas Pro 8 is upward compatible with Vegas 7 project files. I haven’t had any issues with my old projects.

Yes, you want to use Event Opacity to do this. Place the hallway with no one in it on a lower track. Place the person walking on an upper track and turn down the opacity for that event. (i.e., drag down the opacity line on the event). You can use an event fade-in, fade-out to make them fade on and off the screen. I’m pretty sure that Movie Studio has event opacity.

That’s why you want to use manual mode on your XL2, especially exposure and shutter speed. You don’t want to allow the camera to change any settings. This way the shots should will up pretty well assuming these are all locked-down shots on a tripod.
If the hallway has any windows, be careful of the light changing over time.

You know what they say… “if it looks too good to be true… it probably is“. That site is definitely selling pirated software.
If you can’t afford Boris RED then start with Boris FX or Boris Graffiti. Boris offers great upgrade pricing so your initial investment will be preserved. If you want an older version check on eBay but also be careful of pirates on eBay as well.
