I am shooting a scene of a hallway. I want to start off with the shot of ther hallway and have characters fade in and out as they walk up and away from the camera (it is a goodbye scene)

I figure that I can start with the camera set up, shoot several minutes of footage as the base, then apply the shot with the character in it on top, using a fade of some sort.

I’ve not mastered using alpha channels on Sony as of yet (Platinum V8.0), but I’m afraid when I put the two images together, there will be some under/over exposed areas

    Am I making sense?

I know I’ve seen the effect before, so it’s obviously possible.

Using a Canon XL2 to shoot, probably at 24p to get a more film like look.

    Thanks for reading.

That’s why you want to use manual mode on your XL2, especially exposure and shutter speed. You don’t want to allow the camera to change any settings. This way the shots should will up pretty well assuming these are all locked-down shots on a tripod.

If the hallway has any windows, be careful of the light changing over time.

I expect the shoot to happen within a 30 minute time frame.

I have 10 team members that are going to walk up the hall individually.

I suppose I could use an opacity layer, but I would really like to get the look to be that each person is ghostly rather than fully opaque

Yes, you want to use Event Opacity to do this. Place the hallway with no one in it on a lower track. Place the person walking on an upper track and turn down the opacity for that event. (i.e., drag down the opacity line on the event). You can use an event fade-in, fade-out to make them fade on and off the screen. I’m pretty sure that Movie Studio has event opacity.
