    > Now I know the format that I use is right, because my friends use the same format and it works.

Does your friend also use the trial version? It may be a trial limitation due to licensing of some format types.

    > I have tried this with three formats. .flv .wmv and ipod. This message came up all times, as well as with .mp3 format for songs.

I can guarantee you that your friend has never dropped a .flv file into Vegas and gotten it to work because Vegas does not support .flv files. WMV should work as should MP3 but “ipod” is not a format, it’s a device that accepts several formats. If you mean files purchased on iTunes they do not work because of Apples copy protection.

I agree that it is strange the WMV and MP3 don’t work. You may have other software on your PC that is causing a conflict. Especially if you’ve downloaded any of the mega-codec packages that are floating around the internet and have tons of codecs in them. This is a sure fire way to mess up your PC. I’m not sure what else could be the problem.

Look at the ProType Titler that’s built into Vegas. It can make text do all sorts of crazy motion including type on the screen. You can find it in the Media Generators tab.

    > Video 3’s alpha channel is being created using the channel blend effect. Simply creating an alpha channel from the red channel. Simple grey scale.

You haven’t created an alpha channel at all. You have a gray scale mask. To use it, place it above the track you want to mask and change the track compositing mode to Multiply (Mask).

  • The only way to do this in Vegas is with nested projects. The trimmer only edits media and media artifacts. Markers are a timeline artifact not a media artifact.

February 16, 2009 at 1:17 pm in reply to: Compositing space limited?

    > Also with the 3D space, it like takes a snapshot of whats there, so if I imported a 2000×2000 text from photoshop, and put it in the 3D space with it zoomed out it’d get pixelated when i zoomed in…

This is a major different between Track Motion and Pan/Crop that must be understood if you are compositing. Track Motion resizes the media to the project size BEFORE it does anything to it. Pan/Crop resizes after. For example, if you have a DV project that is 720×480, Track Motion will resize a 2000×2000 image to 720×480 BEFORE it zooms in giving you a very pixelated image. Pan/Crop will zoom in first preserving the 2000×2000 image and then resize. You do not want to use Track Motion to zoom in… only out. It is mostly good for Picture in Picture work where you are making the image smaller.

It could be interlacing. Because of the high resolution of HDV (1080i) interlacing artifacts are very small but when you blow them on a big screen they begin to get noticed.

What are you using to drive the projector, a PC or Blu-ray disc? It could be the device isn’t handling the interlacing properly or it could be a problem with the render.

February 16, 2009 at 1:02 pm in reply to: Vegas Render to FLV

Since Vegas doesn’t render to Flash you could render uncompressed or to a lossless codec like HuffYUV or Lagarith in Vegas and then use a Flash encoder on that file. The output from Vegas would be lossless but the output from Flash obviously will not be.

Yes, I would start a new thread and copy what you have explained to be the problem into it. It is very difficult for anyone to diagnose a problem when the computer tells you it’s an unknown error. This doesn’t give you much to go by.

Try performing a render with the computer case open just to make sure it’s not an overheating issue. Also try performing the render to an internal drive just to rule out that the USB connection isn’t failing after all those hours.

Other than that, I don’t know what to say. With no error message from Sony, you are shooting in the dark. 🙁

  • Try saving the AVI file with uncompressed WAV audio before loading into Vegas. I don’t think there is anything you can do in Vegas to make it read the file correctly.

  • You can do this right inside Vegas. Try Tools | Scripting | Render Image Sequence
