I have a problem with the preview stuttering badly when editing in Vegas Studio Platinum Pro 9.

My PC is a Pentium4 3.0GHz with 2GB RAM and heaps (500GB) of disc space, regularly defragged and only lightly loaded. (Sony spec requirement is only 2.8MHz and 512M RAM).

My Vegas still works just fine editing ordinary avi files captured from my previous DV Camcorder, but since I have upgraded to a Sony HDR12 HDD camera, everything I try to edit exhibits the same stutter in preview, doesn’t matter whether the original is full Hi D or standard Hi D, and irrespective of preview setting on draft, auto, best etc.

I had the same files from my new camera uploaded to Vegas running on someone else’s computer and it plays beautifully, so it’s not the camera or source material at fault.

I appreciate that the stuttering preview won’t affect the final rendered result, but it really makes editing very tedious, and it would be great if you could offer an explanation, and suggestions as to how to fix.

If PC capacity is the issue, please recommend a configuration that will work. The PC runs well and behaves perfectly normally in every other respect.

The only other thing I can think of is that I still have installed Pinnacle Studio Plus v10.7 which I used before upgrading to Vegas. Could there be some codec clash or whatever that is causing the problem?

    Would really appreciate your assistance.

    Thanks
    AV

What were the specs on that person’s computer? The Sony Sony HDR12 shoots AVCHD which is extremely taxing on any computer and a single core computer is very old by today’s standards. A faster computer is the only solution with Vegas because it is bound by CPU power.

Thanks, John. Looks like the cost of a new box will have to be added to the cost of the new Handycam and the new Vegas. Would have been good if the hardware specs with Vegas carried a warning to the effect that a LOT more grunt is required for HD. Cheers AV

Perhaps you could shed some light on something else which really baffles me. When I stop a video that’s being edited, the preview image is usually either blurred or exhibiting stripes, depending on the de-interlace settings. Any grab I take at this stage exhibits the same blur or stripes. And yet on the video track itself the stills representing the frames are crystal clear, as are the images in the trimmer. Unfortunately, I can’t grab either of the good images and have to make do with the preview image, even though it is clear that a better version exists underneath.
Any suggestions as to how I can get sharp grabs?

I am using Sony Vegas Platinum edition and am editing video taken using Sony HDR SR11 full HD camcorder. Editing is fine. The edited file size is around 15GB (2 hours of video). When I render the video, rendering stops within 10 minutes and the vegas tool closes. The rendered video is good. How can I render the entire video? I have increased the virtual memory to 30GB on my computer and this has not helped.

Since I did not get any response to my earlier request so far, I think I have not explained the problem I am facing properly. Although I have used earlier Adobe premier elements, I am a novice to the use of Vegas platinum edition. I have shot a video on my trip to someplaces in India in HD using Sony HDR SR11.The length of the Video is approximately 2 hours. While editing the Video in Vegas 9.0, I have inserted a few title slides as well as two video clips (non HD) from .avi files. I am rendering the completed Video into Sony AVC format using the given AVCHD 1920X1080 NTSC template. My intent is to load back the edited Video onto my camcorder using the Picture motion browser and play it on my HD TV.(This was the recommended procedure from Sony). While rendering the video, Vegas crashes after different time intervals. I am able to view and upload the partially rendered Video. I have tried the following things to render the full video without success. I have increased the virtual memory to 30GB. I have reset the number of rendering threads (from preference-video tab) to 1. I have split the Video into 4, 30 minute segments and try to render them separately. I am unable to render the 30 minute footage also. Can any one help me please?

    Hi Ananda,

You may have not gotten a reply because this is a new problem and you should start a new thread so that people see it more easily.

There have been a number of people reporting problems rendering to AVCHD so you are not alone. It is very taxing on even the most modern computers. Increasing your virtual memory is not a good idea. Your virtual memory should be set at 1.5 times your real memory. So if you have 2GB of RAM your virtual memory should be set at 3GB and no more.

How powerful is your PC? Could it be overheating? i.e., is it more than 1 year old and have you vacuumed the dust out lately? Try rendering with the case open and see if that gets you further.

Unfortunately, these are very difficult problems to diagnose. Tell us all that you can about your PC and maybe someone here will have a suggestion.

    Hi John,

Thanks for your response. I will post the details of my computer as soon as I reach home(I am currently at work). In the mean time, can you tell me how do I start a new thread? I am a beginner to this forum and hence may need some handholding initially.

    Thanks for your understanding
    Ananda

    Hi John,

Here are the details of my PC.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 GHz CPU
    Opearting system: XP
    Memory 4Gb DDR2
    Internal Hard disc: 400Gb. 4 partitions. C drive 100Gb.

The Vegas software is residing on the C drive of my internal hard disc. The media files are on an external USB hard disc of 500Gb capacity. I am rendering the files to this external hard disc.
As per your suggestion, I set my virtual memory to 6Gb. I tried rendering a 15mt Video to AVCHD format. It worked fine although it took 3 hours. Based on this success and all my previous partially successful attempts, I felt that 15 to 20 mts video can be successfully rendered. I then tried rendering a 20 mt video. To my utter dismay, the tool (Vegas) crashed with an error message that Microsoft… has encountered a problem and the application has to be closed. Unlike previous attempts, this time it looked like a total crash and there was no partially rendered file. I was doing this overnight and when I went to sleep it had rendered 10%. There were no transitions or video effects introduced. I just had one title slide. Now I do not know what to do. Is there an inherent limitation in Vegas which limits the file size that can be rendered? All my previous renders including the partially rendered portion was around 1.7 to 1.9Gb size.(rendered file size).

    Thanks,
    Ananda

PS; At this stage, can I open a new thread and post all these responses in them?

Yes, I would start a new thread and copy what you have explained to be the problem into it. It is very difficult for anyone to diagnose a problem when the computer tells you it’s an unknown error. This doesn’t give you much to go by.

Try performing a render with the computer case open just to make sure it’s not an overheating issue. Also try performing the render to an internal drive just to rule out that the USB connection isn’t failing after all those hours.

Other than that, I don’t know what to say. With no error message from Sony, you are shooting in the dark. 🙁
