What codec is he editing in on the Mac? He will only be able to avoid rendering by you providing him with files that are in the same codec that he is working in. In HD, that may be problematic on the PC.
If he is using Apple ProRes, it is currently not available on the PC for encoding (though there is a read-only component)
If he is using DVCPRO-HD, it is also tricky, as on the PC it requires the use of the RayLight codec (which much be purchased)
If he is working with Uncompressed HD, you can install the software codecs from either Blackmagic or AJA.

Its definitely not the drives…they are fast enough for uncompressed HD….its the processors that cant keep up. I can do the odd clip here and there in Pro Res, but try to do real editing and it becomes impossible.

Don’t know what it means, but why not try creating a new project, duplicate your bins and move them into the new project and see if the error continues.

Remember…if you do decide to go the EDL route, you need to make separate EDL’s for each video track you use.
EDLs are old and were only meant to convey what was possible in a linear tape based edit suite.

Avid has been migrating to MXF and AAF for quite awhile now.
AAF is the preferred method for MXF media.
The most recent versions of ProTools work with AAF. Just go with AAF.

Honestly, you are screwed. Any advantage you gain “by eliminating the digitizing step” will be lost when you have to import this stuff into your Avid. There is no media that FCP can digitize that can be played without a lengthy import/transcode on an older Avid (there are a few formats on newer Avids that can be done more easily…though not the ones you are working with). In addition to the import time (which will likely be longer than digitizing from tape), you will need double the disk space as Avid will create new OMF media from your Quicktimes on your SAN.
You need to do whatever it takes to convince your bosses to change their mind on this or you are looking at an enormous problem, that hopefully you will not be blamed for. Sorry. FCP and Avid are not interchangable systems. Avid is not a Quicktime based editing system.

Um…. Now that I hear the full story of what you are attempting, I gotta tell you that its going to be a world of pain for you.
Keep in mind, when you try to import this Quicktime footage into your Avid its going to be transcoded to OMF media (you are on an older Avid, right). This is going to take a great deal of time and chew through lots of disk space…. Remember, Avids do not edit with Quicktime media directly!. Even if you capture to the Avid codec directly (and you can’t in this case), you cannot get around this process.

They will not work in your Avid system unless Final Cut is also installed. The Uncompressed 8 and 10 bit codecs are only installed by FCP…they are not part of the standard Quicktime package. They also are not available for PC.
A workaround is to install the software codecs for the AJA Kona or Blackmagic Decklink cards, which are equivalent.
You could also just transcode them to the Avid codec on your FCP system, if available.

Select all the clips….right click and select Remove Attributes.
