I have the X800 in my dual 2ghz G5 and it’s been just fine for what it’s worth.
Unfortunately all the newer cards are PCIe and our machines are PCIx.
If you can afford to upgrade, there are lots of other advantages to an intel machine….pro res, speed…ability to run Snow Leopard when it’s released…etc.

I think the X800 is the best you can get. The newer ones are much more powerful, but they don’t make them for a G5.

Sounds like FCP is getting stuck looking for an after effects plugin used in a sequence in this project that you do not have on your system.. This normally should not cause a crash, but fcp’s ae support isn’t really great
Andreas has a thread below where he wrote an app that can remove all references to a plugin from your sequence… Perhaps it might be helpful to you

I asked because I saw this behavior with XDCAM media. Maybe something about tapeless media trips up some software. If you have access to ProTools, you might try importing and exporting an AAF through it.

Does your sequence contain Group Clips or tapeless media (P2 or XDCAM)?
I have had to deal with similar behavior in another non-Pro Tools audio software product (Neve AudioFile).
The best solution we came up with was to open the AAF in a ProTools system and re-export it. This stripped out whatever Audiofile didn’t like.

You do this in Soundtrack Pro, the audio app that is part of Final Cut Studio.
Use the time stretch function.

Can you open it with your media drives unmounted?
if so, move some of your sequences to a new bin.

Compressor does a great job with this…make sure you set the appropriate settings in the Frame Controls to better or best (I actually think Better is better than Best in many instances)
Be prepared for a VERY long render time, especially if you are on a G5.
The Nattress filter is convenient and does a decent job (not as good as Compressor), and works reasonably fast. The reason Walter states that it works best on individual clips, rather than an edited piece, is that due to the way it blends frames to get to the new frame rate, often it will blend frames across an edit…basically making your cuts “soft cuts”. You may or may not find this objectionable …worth a test.

Compressor doesn’t crop off 3 lines from the top and bottom…it crops off 4 and 2, which avoids the field inversion problem.
