  • [Will Griffith] “Obviously you need to track down your license first.
    “

Thats why I said call Apple. If he registered, they can give it to him.

Kevin…are you saying the ProRes 4444 with alpha will key in real time…full quality…in a standard ProRes timeline ?? Or only in a ProRes 4444 sequence?

[Tom Matthies] “Ya’ll gotta remember too that all the higher end Avid systems have a LOT of hardware support in their board sets that allow for the added functionality you are talking about. FCP is, for the most part, all software based and one of the reasons it’s so much less expensive that Avid.
    My 2¢ worth.
    Tom “

That was true in the Meridien Avid era. Avid now does it without hardware on THE SAME MACS that FCP runs on.

  • Yeah… if you get a new logic board this happens.

If you purchased this legally, just call Apple and they will help you sort it out. If you registered your purchase you should not have any problem.

No. The clip names in the bins are not important. Actually, Avid generates a lengthy number for each piece of media when captured or imported…it doesnt use the filename at all…(or the file itself for imported media—it creates a new file).

The only problem might be if you have to batch re-import it later and you dont know what track number it is. Make sure you include that in your naming scheme.

A really big new feature, if true….

Kevin Monahan reports the new ProRes 4444 codec with an alpha channel plays in real time… Real time graphics keying…. Now FCP can do something every Avid could do since 1998. All joking aside, this is a huge timesaver for graphic intensive shows…have not tested myself.

Automatic Duck only works with sequences, though the new version will allow you to use Avid media without recapture.

As for recreating your project structure, with bins….you are kind of out of luck. Nothing really does that.

BTW…it would be very problematic for you to work without recapture. Avid media is NOT Quicktime…which is what FCP uses. You will not have ANY realtime performance within FCP of Avid media.

If there is anyway for you to keep this in Avid you should. Trying to make this workable is going to be a nightmare.

Kevin Monahan reports in another thread that the new Pro Res 4:4:4:4 codec will play at full quality in real time with an alpha channel….so apparently we have realtime keying.

[Kevin Monahan] “My bad. I just tested it. It actually does playback in real time (dark green render quality) with SafeRT/High Quality/Full Frame Rate. So there you have it! “

    Woo Hoo!

This is an unbelievably bad limitation in sports coverage, where a score or clock graphic is up for nearly the whole time. Its totally a real time effect on Avid, but on FCP you need to basically render vast sections of the show. Just love looking at a producers face when you have to explain that one.
