Some FCP7 Improvements that a LOT of people on the Cow are overlooking.

    Improved render management
    Global transitions
    Improved tabs
Background exporting (Using Compressor not FCP)

One other important thing to note is that FCS3 is Intel only. This means that all the legacy drivers and other supporting architecture for the legacy PPC machines can be stripped out (like they are doing with Snow Leopard). When a peace of software is built to run on both PPC & Intel Macs it is basically written to speak two languages at the same time. Buy removing support for the old language of PPC’s it will allow the application to run cleaner and faster.

As for all the crying out there because of no BlueRay support in DVD SP, and the loss of LiveType. those things are nothing to hold your breath over. I don’t know one professional editor that has even opened Live Type in well over a year, if you want to use the cheesy life fonts then use monition. As for the BlueRay support, how hard is it to understand that BlueRay is NEVER going to catch on like DVD has. Im willing to bet the the growth of online distribution of movies (things like Netflix, Blockbuster, AppleTV, Hulu etc etc is growing faster then the growth of BlueRay. Apple can clearly see that

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

    Nope.
All they need to do is make available a prosumer stand alone Blu Ray RECORDER that has at least component video, and preferably HDMI, inputs. Then the Blu Ray market will take off. This is the same old Sony Betamax classic argument all over again. The movie studios fought video RECORDERS from day one. All Hollywood wants you to do is consume their swill, they don’t want you to be able to create and distribute content. That is the real reason Blu-Ray hasn’t “taken off.”

    no livetype anymore?

    damn!
It may be simple but its perfect for adding those annoying little legal riders at the bottom of commercials. I use it a lot…just hope the upgrade doesn’t remove my older copy.

Doubt thats enough to get me bugged, sounds like a pretty good upgrade to me. Can’t really see what all the bitchings about. I’m a pro editor, and FCP works fine for me. You just gotta know how your toolset works!

Obviously an update is welcome, but I do think it has left a lot to be desired and it’s not whining for the sake of whining.

Firstly, lack of a search bar in the browser is unforgivable in my opinion. There is no excuse. This is a feature that I have longed for, just a simple spotlight interface that allows you to search bins and effects. Also an implementation of smart bins (just like smart folders and playlists) would have been incredibly useful and a real time saver. Search fields are already in Motion and Soundtrack, why aren’t they in FCP?

Why is the text generator from motion not integrated into FCP to replace the text tool? This is simple stuff, the ability to type directly onto the canvas would be a huge improvement and hardly a big deal to implement. What about rulers and guides in the canvas? Nope 3rd party workarounds will have to do.

Whether you think Blu-Ray is here to stay or not is irrelevant. It is a standard that FCS is not supporting in any real way. DVD Studio Pro has received no updates now in the last two versions of FCP, not one improvement. Is it still going to support HD-DVD? A dead format? If you want to author Blu-Ray you have to look elsewhere, because Apple is treating its Pro-sumer market like the consumer market, they want downloads and that’s it.

A lot of the big features that have been touted are really quite minor, is it really worth trumpeting automatic upload to MobileMe when this can already be done through Quicktime? You can already screen share in iChat, so is this really a banner update?

The Interface of Color did need an overhaul. It’s text is appalling and its file browser is terrible, It is a very powerful piece of software but it was a very common bug bear that it’s interface leaves a lot to be desired (a continued reliance on 3-button mice for one, would it kill them to add a slider?). I have no problem with the overall room structure and layout, but was it too much to ask to bring it in line with the rest of the pro-apps? In fact, is it too much to ask to bring all the FCS apps in line with each other? This is not window dressing, it needed addressing and they haven’t done it. The App has barely changed since they bought FInal Touch and re-named it.
I’ve heard plenty of comments about how FCP needs to stay familiar so that Editors do not get a culture shock from a brand new look. Come on, we’re professionals not luddites, I’m pretty sure anyone posting on these boards would be able to handle some interface changes, otherwise we’d all be using Avid because we don’t want to try anything different.

I know I am really complaining about this, and any improvement is welcome, but to me FCS should be light years ahead of Premiere and the likes of Vegas, we know Apple can do it. For two versions now they have treaded water when they could be trailblazing. I am so disappointed and I believe it’s for valid reasons. I’ll still be using FCS, but it seems to me that it is just not a priority for Apple anymore.

Don’t forget improved XML handling with AUX tc. That’s huge.

As a note, LiveType is still included in Final Cut Express (probably where it belongs too).

We can use AUX tc now! Sweet! I’ve got to keep digging.

The more I start digging into the details, the more I realize how good of an upgrade this really is. I’ll start compiling a list of features that I’ll quickly learn that I never could have lived without as soon as I can get it installed.

    From this page:

    https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/whats-new.html

    Improved XML interchange
Final Cut Pro XML Version 5 supports greater interoperability with third-party software by preserving additional settings and metadata during round-trip file interchange. XML Version 5 also supports AUX timecode, which is used for sound sync and audio editing.

Not much detail, but from what I have heard XML has had some major improvements.

As a professional editor for 30 years I have had several occasions to use
live type in the last year, Zane. So….now you know one 😉
As to bluray…My commercial clients want a authored Blu-ray copies of their long form shows and short form commercials. My corporate clients want to impress their bosses with a blu-ray of their latest long form training or corporate communication piece. My clients that make movies say since we shot and edited on HD, they want a blu-ray to show their friends (they HAVE BD players). There are workarounds and tricks but given the finances and resources these days I cant make a nicely authored presentation disk like I have with DVDSP. The expensive authoring alternatives are prohibitive at this economic moment but maybe options in the future.Thats just the way it is.
