July 24, 2009 at 2:20 pmHey,
I think live type is great! some of the fade and crawl tricks are fine for lower thirds and “bullet points”and even those stupid little bouncy things once in a while,
its fast and stable and pretty straightforward. just dont try and do too much.
if you can do that stuff in motion i suppose thats ok
I hope it doesnt make motion too bloated 🙁

July 24, 2009 at 3:04 pm[Russell Lasson] “As a note, LiveType is still included in Final Cut Express (probably where it belongs too).”
Amen I also think that is where it belongs.

July 24, 2009 at 3:13 pm[Zane Barker] “I don’t know one professional editor that has even opened Live Type in well over a year,”
I’ve used livetype in every one of the 200 or so projects that I have done over the past year. It’s a great tool and over the past 5 years of using it…it’s crashed all of twice. It’s integration with final cut is top notch…and it’s incredibly easy to modify single characters in a text element.
Motion on the other hand has been a nightmare. It still crashes regularly….it’s inegration with Final cut has gotten better but could still use some work. About 1 out of 7 times i use motion i have to render the movie out of motion rather than use the “seamless integration” with final cut because of some render problem or layer shifting. All that aside….the #1 thing that keeps me from using Motioin for text is it’s virtually impossible to modify part of a text file without modifying the whole thing. If I want to make shift the baseline of one word in a text element…. it will shift the baseline of the whole element. And this isn’t an isolated incident for me. It’s been every version of Motion since V1 on 3 different machines.

July 24, 2009 at 3:16 pmI use LiveType on a daily basis although I’ve almost never used the actual LiveType fonts themselves. It’s actually a capable little titling program that does a good job fast. If you get into it a little and learn how to adjust the keyframes and the time attributes, it’s much more versatile than you might realize. It’s fast and easy once you get to know it a little. Sure I can do titles in Motion, but I have quite a few ongoing projects that require updating timelines with current information. Livetype was a no-brainer for this. All these timelines will have to be rebuilt using Motion files instead. As an professional editor (35 yrs. in the biz) I’m another person who will miss the application. When FCS3 arrives and gets installed, I will attempt to load LiveType from my FC@ 2 install disks. It will me interesting to see how it works from within FCP7. RIP LiveType…

You and the few other people are the RARE exception. I see no need for Apple to cater to the 1% of people with FCS that actually use livetype, especially when livetype has been perfectly built into motion for years now.

NO…livefonts have been integrated. Live fonts and livetype are not the same thing. Live fonts are a part of livetype….. a part that i’ve only used maybe 3 times ever.

Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!”I don’t think it’s too much to ask to be able to have a dollar sign smaller than the actual numbers behind it. It’s simple to do in AE and simple to do in Livetype. It’s a pain to do in motion.

July 24, 2009 at 3:47 pm[Andrew Keil] “Firstly, lack of a search bar in the browser is unforgivable in my opinion.”
That would be very cool. Have you ever told Apple? Use the feedback menu item and suggest it.
[Andrew Keil] “Why is the text generator from motion not integrated into FCP to replace the text tool?”
Text in FCP could definitely be improved.
[Andrew Keil] “Whether you think Blu-Ray is here to stay or not is irrelevant.”
Check out my post on this. I still think Apple will do something more extensive with Blu-Ray authoring, but they obviously have their reasons. Whether you need it or not, Apple is making business decisions. Notice that no Mac comes with a Blu-Ray option yet. There is a larger issue at hand. They obviously know it’s important to the client base, that’s why there is the basic authoring in Compressor/FCP now.
[Andrew Keil] “You can already screen share in iChat, so is this really a banner update? “
Performance on full screen sharing is poor for video. This really is a banner update that will really allow my facility to stand out from others.
[Andrew Keil] “The App has barely changed since they bought FInal Touch and re-named it. “
Being an original Final Touch user, the app became stable once Apple go it. That was a great step!
[Andrew Keil] “but was it too much to ask to bring it in line with the rest of the pro-apps?”
Not trying to be rude, but what would this buy you? Would you be a better colorist if the Color interface would be more like the DVD Studio Pro interface? At best, it would probably save a few seconds there and there because of more consistent file/menu layout. I think it would be nice too if things felt more cohesive, but would it change the way I work? The apps are still quite powerful and they continue to improve.
[Andrew Keil] “For two versions now they have treaded water when they could be trailblazing.”
The more I get into learning about the update, this falls more into the line of trailblazing than treading water. I do see that you’re disappointed though. I think this has more to do with how Apple has marketed and hyped FCP upgrades in the past. I think that it has set an expectation on when upgrades should come and how big or revolutionary they should be. Now that they’re changing their approach, it’s understandable that they’re not meeting so many people’s expectation on what the upgrade “should be”.
Heck, for $300, this upgrade is a steal and a no-brainer!
