    So here’s an interesting question.

How did the DP and you split up the files? Did you each take home Hardrives from the shoot?

If that’s the case, then something seems to have gone wrong with the file copy. I’ve had similar things happen for un explained reasons where a whole batch of files won’t copy correctly… in that case they wouldn’t play in VLC and Premiere crashed when they were imported.

  • [Gerard Tay] “On exporting, Premiere Pro can use preview files if you tick that checkbox. FCP is able to copy frames off the source QT files if no effects are added, without re-compression, on a same as source export. and for frames with effects added, it will copy frames from the render files if that frame has been rendered. Premiere does the latter, but unfortunately, when “use preview files” is checked, the speed bump is not the same as in FCP.”

Almost, but not quite. There’s a big diference between “Use Previews” in Premiere and outputting a fully rendered timeline in FCP.

FCP uses the encoded frames as is, a straight data copy from point A to point B. This is possible do to the Quicktime architecture and ProRes.

When you check “Use Previews” in Premiere it doesn’t re-render the previously rendered affects, but it still decodes each frame of video and re-encodes it in the output format, even if it’s exactly the same.

This is why why FCP is still faster in this situation. It’s not actually rendering anything, just copying data around. In Adobe lingo this is called Smart Rendering, and it’s currently only available when rendering XDCAM HD in an MXF OP1a wrapper.

[Mandla Bolekaja] “I don’t see where I can enter numbers and change the curves.”

Maybe you can post a screen shot? I think we’re confused as to exactly what you’re trying to do.

  • As far as I can tell, Premiere doesn’t support rendering to MPEG-2 at resolutions higher then 720×608 except HDV in a quicktime.

That doesn’t mean it can’t import them, but this could be why your files won’t play.

Also, this MPEG-2 video is in an mp4 container. I don’t think there’s anything technically wrong with that, but it’s certainly an odd choice by whoever encoded it.

  • [Alvin Lowery] “When nest a sequence with all the clips in the timeline and apply the
timecode effect. I can not get it to generate timecode from the media.”

That’s because the nested sequence is the media. To get the timecode of the actual clips you’ll have to put the timecode effect on the actual clips. It gives you the timecode of whatever the affect is applied to.

Thankfully, applying an effect to a bunch of clips all at once is easy.

Select the first clip and apply the Timecode affect and set all the settings as you want them.

Second, click on the name of the Timecode effect in the Effects panel to select the affect, and hit copy.

Then Select all the other clips in the timeline and hit paste. (not paste effects, just paste.)

Easy. Select everything on the timeline, right click, and select “remove effects” Then deselect everything other then Opacity. If ether of the two options at the bottom are grayed out, it’s cause you don’t have any audio or video affects, so don’t worry that you can’t uncheck them when they’re grayed out.

  • Did a little digging. What is the Timebase is your sequence set to? When the Timebase is set to a non TV standard timebase (such as 10fps 12fps 14.71fps.. premiere supports anything,) “frames” is the only option.

I’ve had cellphone videos with odd frame rates… what are you editing?

  • That is very odd…. I shall do a little exploring.

I’ve created a little tutorial for you:
