Since 25p and 24p are so close in frame rate you can use Compressor to fix things. The audio will vari-speed as well to match.

Output a 25p self-contained QT of your sequence and open in Compressor. You are going to make a 24p version of this movie.

In the video settings tab, select the codec (ProRes I hope) and change the frame rate to custom/23.976.
Select the audio tab and output LInear PCM 48khz 16 bit.
In the Frame Controls tab at the bottom select Rate Conversion/Best.
Click the very bottom button that says, “so source frames play at 23.976”
Output at 100% of source.

You’ll now have a 23.976 quicktime will vari-speed audio that you can encode to Mpeg-2/24p for DVD.

The 5D only shoots progressive frames, so you shouldn’t have any field dominance. Is the 5D stuff only b-roll or is it sync sound?

If the 5D is only b-roll, you can conform the media with cinema tools or compressor.

Using Compressor:

In Cinema Tools:

At the bottom right of the viewer, select “Conform”
Select 23.98 (23.976 actually)
Hit “Conform”

Final Cut Pro isn’t cut out for this type of conversion. Try Compressor.

Make sure all the data is backed up, as reformatting will erase the drive. Since you only have one external hard drive, Raid is not format option for you.

Simple go to the erase tab and format the drive as Mac OS Extended Journaled.

It sure seems like it narrows it down to the G-Drive. Maybe back up the data and reformat the drive will solve the issue.

As a work-around, you can also go into the FCP/User Prefs and switch “on timecode break/warn after capture”.

Worst case scenario (only use in a pinch) you can simple transfer your captured clip from your internal drive to the G-Drive and relink the clip in FCP.

Are you doing any color correction to the footage that requires rendering? If you keep everything in “XDCam Land” the quality will suffer as you render back to XDCam format.

My XDCam workflow is as follows if doing color correction within FCP.
-Load XDCam in and edit in a XDCam timeline.
-Once the edit is finished, change your sequence codec to ProRes and do color adjustments and render.
-Export out in ProRes.

If you don’t have the storage for this, you’ll have to accept the fact that the program quality will suffer as you render back to XDCam format.

Two things to try.

1. Put a black slug or black color solid where there is no media.
2. In your sequence settings, under the”render control” tab, select “ProRes 422” from the codec button.

As for your second question, you can also use the “conform” function in Cinema Tools to convert your 30p footage to 25p.

The resulting footage will have a slight slo-mo effect to it; this may be a benefit or a deal breaker depending on the footage especially if you shot sync-sound.
