  • Can’t capture to my G-drive

    Hello everyone.

I recently got a new computer here at work – here are some specs:

    Mac Pro OS 10.6.4
    Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor speed 2.26 GHz

I had a G5 before, and I used to always capture to my G-drive. Since getting the Mac Pro, however, every time I try to capture to the G-drive, it captures about 5 seconds and then says “locating time code break” (there is no time code break – when I capture to the internal drive, it captures just fine).

The only thing that changed in my setup is the computer and software (we upgraded to FCP Studio) – it’s the same G-drive, same deck, everything is still hooked up the same.

I’ve never run into anything like this before, so I don’t even know where to start to troubleshoot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sure seems like it narrows it down to the G-Drive. Maybe back up the data and reformat the drive will solve the issue.

As a work-around, you can also go into the FCP/User Prefs and switch “on timecode break/warn after capture”.

Worst case senario (only use in a pinch) you can simple transfer your captured clip from your internal drive to the G-Drive and relink the clip in FCP.

I’ve had a lot of issues with G-Raids when I daisy chain them (massive drops in read/write speeds) so if you aren’t already, try plugging the drives you need directly into the computer and see if that helps. Seems to be an issue with some of their chipsets.

Make sure that it’s formatted MacOS extended GUID.
How is it formatted on the moment?
    Check in Disk Utility.

How is the g drive connected to the computer.

I’ll have to check tomorrow to see how it’s formatted, as I’m already home from work.

@Tony – I only have one G-drive, and it’s connected directly to the computer.

    @Zane – it’s connected via firewire, 6-pin to 8-pin.

Use an 8 to 8 pin. You are not getting the full throughput of FW 800. You are going FW400 to FW800.

Here are my options for Formatting:

As far as going from 8-pin to 8-pin, I’m assuming you mean that I need to get a new drive. I agree with you there; however, it took me 6 months to get new headphones, and I’ve been waiting for a new hot shoe for my camera for almost 3 months now, so I don’t think I’m very high on the list of priorities (I’m the only videographer in a non-profit organization).

In this screen, click the G-drive on the left.
Then there is more information on the bottom.

Make sure all the data is backed up, as reformatting will erase the drive. Since you only have one external hard drive, Raid is not format option for you.

Simple go to the erase tab and format the drive as Mac OS Extended Journaled.
