May 9, 2011 at 4:39 pm in reply to: DVD Menu Quality

Hey, I’m running into the same issue.

I was given a menu created in Photoshop that consists of 11 layers (background + a Normal and Selected layer for each of the 5 buttons). Misc graphics were merged with the Background, and the button layers each rasterized individually. They want it to show up full screen on a 16:9 monitor and letterboxed on a 4×3 monitor. It was created at 1920×1080 at 150 dpi and set to Square Pixels.

No one is happy with the quality. The type is not crisp/clear and shows bad jagged edges.

I can probably provide more info if you ask me, but can’t think of what else to say here.

Interesting. I saw the AT8202 (Audio Technica) that provides -10dB, -20dB or -30dB attenuation. Is this at all what the -50dB and -60dB settings in the HVX menu are doing? I usually have mine set to -60dB. Would the attenuator simply be adding more?

Yeah, that’s definitely the best option. I’ve contacted a few of the “tapers” as well for a good live recording.

yeah, the sound is not a make or break part of this (although I’m sure it sounds like it probably should be!), but it’s not really in the budget to hire someone. I was just wondering what preliminary steps i could take in the camera’s menu settings to minimize distortion. I may also need to have the mic checked to see if its been damaged at some point.

    thanks for your suggestions!

yeah, it’s definitely a run & gun type of project. Trying to capture guitarists from different bands playing a special guitar on stage. Never exactly sure which song during the set they’re going to play it, so I have to be waiting out front with the camera ready to shoot. It’s usually in amphitheater/concert hall settings. I’m also dealing with tight security because I’m usually only cleared to shoot during the song(s) they play the guitar in.

Yes, it should be. I would just drag the CONTENTS folder off of the camera, and upload that. It will be easier and more organized for the editor if they just have the CONTENTS folder just how it was from the camera.

Yes, you would need to download the driver (which should come on the installation disc with the camera).

    https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/pcdriver_li_e.htm

While I believe FCE can edit DVCProHD if the QuickTime component/codec for it is installed, there is no P2 support in FCE. Something like the FS-100 or Raylight(?) can create a P2 MXF directory structure, or it can create a QuickTime file. However, the QuickTime file will always be encoded using the codec output by the camera (DV, DVCPro50, or DVCProHD), so without having the corresponding codec on your Mac, you won’t be able to use the file. Not sure if you can download these codecs online. You may have to upgrade to FCP in order to get these (and many other) codecs from the FCP installation discs.

    Hope this helps.

    Noah,

It doesn’t exactly make sense, but yes, I do edit on a 23.98 timeline.

    Jeremy,

So you’re suggesting that I leave my original sequence settings at DVCPRO HD 720p60, and do a QuickTime Movie export (uncheck “Make movie self-contained”)? Do I then import that into Compressor?
I’ve attached pictures of both my sequence settings and my export settings (although I normally would just set in/out points and “export using Compressor”). Thanks for any suggestions!!!
