editing P2 footage to H.264 .mov
Some guys I know are editing with Vegas version 6. They shot on the HVX 200 with 720pN quality. I need them to be able to export in 2 different ways:
1) H.264 QuickTime for uploading to an ftp site for multiple people to view and give feedback.
2) Uncompressed QuickTime to be brought in to FCP or After Effects for some graphics and color correction.
As of now, they aren’t too savvy on export options and have so far only been able to provide a Muxed MPEG2 file. Can anyone help me with some solutions or advice? Thanks so much in advance!

They should be able to render an uncompressed Quicktime 6 file (I don’t think Quicktime 7 was out in the Vegas 6 days). Vegas cannot output Quicktime h.264. You need to use Quicktime Pro to do that.
My recommended workflow would be to purchase Quicktime Pro, then output uncompressed Quicktime from Vegas 6 and convert that file to h.264 in Quicktime Pro. This should give you the two formats that you need.

I was able to take their Muxed MPEG2 file and export an H.264 QuickTime with audio through MPEG Streamclip. I can then do whatever I need to with that file through QuickTime Pro on my machine.
The only thing I’m now worried about is that they are able to provide me with a TOTALLY UNCOMPRESSED file. I’m not familiar with Sony Vegas at all. Can you give me some specifics as to what sequence settings and export options will render a totally uncompressed file?

From the Vegas 6 main menu, choose File | Render As…
Select Quicktime 6 (*.mov) as the Save as type. then press the Custom button.
On the Custom Template page, select the Video tab and for Video Format choose None. Optionally, save the template as “Quicktime Uncompressed” and press OK. then render. That will give you a Quicktime file that is uncompressed. (this should be the Default Template anyway.)
BTW you want to make your h.264 file from this and not the highly compressed MPEG2 file that they have you. The results will be better quality because it will only be compressed once.
