You might give a try to Captain’s Blowout Filter. It works on the theory that not all color channels are necessarily over exposed. Even though the red channel may be blown out, the green channel may still contain good information. This plugin lets you substitute one channel for another in the over exposed areas and color correct it to match. There’s a tutorial here for the filter. There are more free FCP plugins here.

Experiment with rolling off in the 7 to 10kHz range to moderate squeakiness and boosting 200 to 300Hz to add fullness. A little compression (2:1) might also help.

Why not save it to another project name. As long as the media is in the same place, that should work. If you need an independent copy of the project Media Manage it.
