  • Geriatric? Not quite yet. However, I do admit to knowing how to edit with a razor blade.

Here’s a manual approach that might solve your problem. The azimuth of the playback head has an adjustment screw. If you turn it one way or the other whilst listening to playback, you can move the head into a position to obtain the best sound. After you finish with this, you should return the head to its spec posistion. You can do that by finding an audio alignment tape. These should still be available on ebay or perhaps a local broadcaster would have one. You play the tape and adjust the azimuth control until you get maximum output.

    Hope this helps.

I was trying to capture s-video to 8-bit uncompressed. My normal capture is component NTSC 8-bit uncompressed. In the past I just changed the capture mode to s-video 8-bit uncompressed in the capture dialog.

  • Search this site and the Final Cut Pro site for sound effects, FX and SFX. I’ve seen the list you want posted any number of times. I’m sure it will pop up in your search. From memory I think sounddogs.com, soundrangers.com and soundsparx.com are three pretty good sites.

January 21, 2006 at 2:38 am in reply to: Export from FCP to Flash…fastest method?

I use Sorenson Squeeze. You can get a version just for Flash. It’s a lot less expensive than the entire Flash app and it’s much better than Swish. Allow time to play with the program. It has some very good presets, but it takes a while to perfect your encodes. But once you do, they look great. Be aware that Flash 8 now has an excellent encoder that allows you to create a flv with an alpha channel. I believe this will be a part of the next Squeeze update. Also, I think I just read that the new AfterFX 7 can export Flash with alpha channel.

Check out the Flash forum for more information.

In the voiceover tool having a control to disable the tones that lead up to a marked OUT point. The in tones are fine, but the out tones are very distracting to the talent. And when doing ADR, often the cues are only a few seconds long. Then, all talent is hearing in the phones are tones.

Currently, you can turn all tones on or off. How about two radio buttons: one for tones leading up to the IN point and the other if you want tones leading up to the OUT point.

When you uncheck that button, ALL the tones go away. I just want the tones leading up to the out point not to play. I guess I’ll not use an out marker and stop the record on the fly. Thanks.

Adding to Matte’s idea, you might try adding a little echo or reverb to “sell” the effect. Both are plugins in FCP.

A method of having realtime timecode out as a sequence plays. Maybe do it using midi timecode. There are lots of boxes that will convert MTC to SMPTE timecode.

January 15, 2006 at 7:28 pm in reply to: Cost of Sony repair

Contact Roger Macie. He’s in the Boston area and is the repair “guru.” Roger Macie Video is used by many networks to get a consistent setup on their cameras. His website is https://www.macievideo.com/ and toll-free # is 888-MACIEVIDEO. I’ve been a customer of his for years. Not only will he fix what you ask for, he’ll also let you know if anything else should be considered. And his prices are very reasonable. I haven’t used Sony service for years because of their pricing and often-botched work.
