  • Cost of Sony repair

My VX-2000 is dropping frames and dropping audio. Some here have suggested it probably needs cleaning and adjusting. Just went to the Sony site. Filled out form to send in camcorder for repair. Support says my flat rate for repair will be $515 plus tax.

Just thought you guys might like to know.

That is standard now as the service depots need to charge a minimum fee to cover among things the overhead, dozens of employees and engineers, lease etc etc.

You should try to find an independent video engineer or service engineer who charges by the hour. You could also go to a major rental facility and ask if they do outside service work.

FYI not all the work is done by Sony internally as they send overflow work to outside contractors.

Here in Hawaii, aside from a Sony factory service center, there’s a company called “Video Engineering.” Very good service. They work on broadcast equiipment. Don’t know if they work on the VX2000.

Thanks for the comments. I’ll definitely be looking for a local tech. Don’t know if I’ll find one though. I live near Raleigh, N.C. and only recall one facility that ‘might’ do this kind of work. But I haven’t seen their sign in a long time and either they’ve moved to a new location or gone out of business.

Contact Roger Macie. He’s in the Boston area and is the repair “guru.” Roger Macie Video is used by many networks to get a consistent setup on their cameras. His website is https://www.macievideo.com/ and toll-free # is 888-MACIEVIDEO. I’ve been a customer of his for years. Not only will he fix what you ask for, he’ll also let you know if anything else should be considered. And his prices are very reasonable. I haven’t used Sony service for years because of their pricing and often-botched work.
