I suspect your friend’s system was set up for some flavor of surround sound and was incorrectly interpreting your sound track.
As for the way you cut your audio my only suggestion would be to pan all the clips to center (0) so you have mono sound (unless you want each person’s voice to come from a different side). You can set the audio to mono in your first clip and then paste its attributes to all the other clips.
Also, listen carefully to the background sound. You may have to adjust the gain from interviewer to interviewee so you don’t get noticeable changes in “room tone.”
